Product Description VAL KILMER STARS AS A PART SIOUX FBI AGENT WHO RELUCTANTLYAWAKENS TO HIS HERITAGE AS HE INVESTIGATES A MURDER ON AN INDIAN RESERVATION.
Amazon.com Tough but moving, Thunderheart is an unusual story about an arrogant FBI agent (Val Kilmer) who participates in a federal investigation of a murder on an Oglala Sioux reservation. Kilmer's character is part Sioux himself, a detail that leaves him cold as he sets about pushing his way through the community to find facts on the case. In time, however, he begins to feel an ethnic tug and grows increasingly sympathetic to the locals and hostile toward his fellow G-men, much to the dismay of his agency mentor (Sam Shepard). The script is based on real events that occurred on the Pine Ridge Reservation in 1975 in South Dakota (involving an armed standoff between Indian activists and the FBI, an event that prompted Thunderheart director Michael Apted to make a companion documentary, Incident at Oglala). The conclusion of Thunderheart feels like politically charged whimsy, but the real strength of the film is Kilmer's outstanding performance as a man in transformation. Apted's clear-eyed depiction of the Sioux's spiritual and cultural continuity with the past has none of the cloying romanticism of other films about Indians. Produced by Robert De Niro. --Tom Keogh

Indian film February 2, 2010 BarbaraLWalker (Oceanside CA) A great film. This movie should be watched by all of us. People need to know how the Indians suffered for what was theirs in the first place.
One that Hollywood Got Right January 16, 2010 Christina Paul (Anamosa, IA USA) Thunderheart is one those rare films that takes real life events and strings them together in a short space of time so that viewers get a clear picture of the people and the issues faced. Based off of a number of events that happened in the mid seventies, you see the Leonard Peltier incident, the siege at Wounded Knee between Indians and Federal Agents and you see an approximation regarding the murder of Anna Mae Aquash because she was talking about uranium. Graham Greene plays Walter Crow Horse, Val Kilmer is Agent Lavoi and former AIM Chairman, John Trudell - who was there for many of these events and then some - plays Jimmy Loooks Twice. Allare fabulous in their respective roles. This film gives a very good synopsis as to what First Nations peoples face to this day with regard to sovereignty, land rights, and just outright survival of both their culture and the People themselves.
When you grow up in an Indigenous household and you saw these events being reported in the various tribal newspapers of the era as well as on the news or hearing your relatives talk about them, it realy hits home in a big way. These are images and events that will be with me my entire life because some of us were keenly awre of them. It is refreshing to see the story be told in a way that is not pure Hollywood hype as some reviewers have charged. I am not sure that the movie was meant to be entertainment as much as to be a cinematic record of these events that have gotten far less attention than what they deserve.
Thunder Heart January 11, 2010 bhuff (Phoenix, AZ USA) I purchased 2. One for me and one for my son. A fun poignant movie that we both love.
One for both guys and gals, not to be missed. December 11, 2009 Stacy A. Winn (southern california) This is a great movie that will keep you interested. Both guys and gals will enjoy this one, loosly based on some true facts of 1970s life on the Reservation. The acting is good, the script is excellent. Not to be underestimated!
Still a great story November 30, 2009 Stephen J. Powers Greene and Kilmer are great in this movie. I haven't seen it in a while, but it still holds up. Delivery was fast and item arrived as promised.
