Amazon.com Tom Berenger and Billy Zane head the cast in this silly action film about a tough Marine and an Olympics marksman who team up in the Panamanian jungle to take out a rebel leader and the drug kingpin financing him. Berenger's done this switched-off soul bit before, but Zane doesn't seem quite ready for his part. In any case, the acting doesn't matter as much to director Luis Llosa as fancy camerawork to give viewers the sense of a bullet hurling along its trajectory. --Tom Keogh
Product Description Tom Berenger and Billy Zane load their weapons for hair-trigger suspense and through-the-heart action in this non-stop guerrilla adventure exploding with raw firepower. One shot. One kills. No exceptions. By that hard and fast rule legendary Marine sniper Tom Beckett (Berenger) serves his only duty. With a dossier boasting 74 confirmed kills he may be ready for his final assignment. But is he ready for his roughest? As his spotter the Pentagon has chosen GS-9 Richard Miller (Zane)-a silver-medal marksman aiming for a Washington promotion. Together the bush-savvy gunner and the inexperienced bureaucrat must track down and eliminate a powerful rebel leader and his Colombian drug-lord financier. It is a suicide mission into the jungles of Central America where a man carries his life in his hands--and lives it one bullet at a time. Cliched and mediocre June 27, 2009 One-Line Film Reviews (Ann Arbor) The Bottom Line: With its exploding grass shacks, evil ethnic enemy types, Central American locations and uninspired acting, Sniper often plays more like a boring parody of action movies than a legitimate entry in the genre; unless you're a die-hard fan of Tom Berenger or Billy Zane (do those exist?) I would advise you to stay far away from this unappealing film. 2/4
Not really widescreen February 7, 2009 James H. Stephens (ATLANTA, GA USA) One star just because the manufacturer can't get the facts right. I like this movie and wanted the widescreen version. After reading other reviews, I carefully checked the Amazon description. Yep, it said "widescreen." So I ordered it. When it arrived, I checked the package before opening it. Yep. It said "widescreen," right there on the box. When I played the movie, I saw that dreadful message telling me that the movie was "modified to fit my screen." It was a pan-and-scan full-screen version. I even took out the DVD to make sure I wasn't playing the wrong side of a two-sided disc. Nope. It had only one playable side. I returned it to Amazon.
pretty good movie January 28, 2009 Odell Wilson (La., USA) I enjoyed the movie, the casting maybe could have got a better co-star to go with Berenger? But overall I seen worst movies.
Carlos Hathcock OR Tom Berenger? February 14, 2008 Irene Boucher IF ANYONE has ever read the book entitled "Marine sniper" about the infamous marine corp. sniper Carlos Hathcock, and have seen the first installment of this series "sniper". THEN THEY KNOW its a movie about Hathcock straight out the book! Sniper vs Sniper, and ITS ABOUT DAMN TIME someone recognized Hathcock! so I'm all for this movie! its a AWESOME STORY! POINT BLANK and PERIOD! Ofcourse the names are all substituted :( but like I said, if you know the mans story and the tours he served in Nam. Then you'll LOVES this movie TOO! I Recomend this to ANY AND ALL. who prefer "one shot, one kill! NO EXCEPTIONS!" kind of storyline rather than "tearing up the country side with millions of rounds of ammunition." BUT Read the book "Marine Sniper" FIRST! it'll really key you in to this movies story and the links between the two! You'll agree also if you do. that this movie is based on Carlos Hathcock. GET IT WATCH IT LOVE IT. Oh and the sequals are kinda crappy too though.

It was the DVD that I was looking for but I wanted it in widescreen. While the version that I received stated "widescreen" on the package, the DVD was actually fullscreen. I was disappointed and returned the item. I would still like to obtain this item in widescreen as it will complete my collection of the subsequent two films on this character.
