Computer scientist Hannon Fuller (Armin Mueller-Stahl) finds something extremely important. Knowing that he's marked for assassination, he leaves a message in the virtual reality world he's designed, hoping it will be found by colleague Douglas Hall (Craig Bierko). Hall is a suspect in Fuller's murder and indeed finds a bloody shirt in his house, with no recollection of what he did the night before. Hall plunges headlong into Fuller's world (a re-creation of 1937 Los Angeles) to try to unravel the slaying and is soon knee-deep in confusion and trouble. What this film lacks in character depth and plot cohesiveness it makes up for in special effects and high concept. Fans of films like Blade Runner, Dark City, eXistenZ, and even the game Sim City should find this appealing. Of course, there's the question of letting the computers do all the heavy lifting in films while the humans walk through the plot (an all-too-familiar scenario in 1999), but the re-creation of '30s Los Angeles is certainly something to see, pallid script and acting or not. The Thirteenth Floor is a stylish modern-day noir that raises questions about technology versus reality, all the while wrapped up in a murder-mystery story line. --Jerry Renshaw

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite movies   May 8, 2009
    Roy E. Oetting
I like sci-fi. I despise horror. I don't like super natural movies. This movie has a premise/plot like nothing else that I can think of. I thought the acting was excellent. The CG is good. I like the different color themes for the different periods. I would also say that I think Mol is one of the top 10 beautiful women ever. I could look at her all day. I wonder if she has a poster?

4 out of 5 stars A Sleeper Destined To Be A Classic   May 1, 2009
    Penny Dreadful (Under Your Skin)
In the course of a fortnight three different unconnected people on Facebook suggested I should see this movie. With that sort of strange juxtaposing of opinions behind it, it was as if the universe itself was wanting me to see The Thirteenth Floor, and who am I to argue with the universe? Having now seen this movie I can report that the universe's ability to recommend motion pictures is impressive. I liked The Thirteenth Floor both in its own right and in its capacity to be a sort of anti-Matrix, a smarter, less flashy, more to the point species of intelligent science fiction lacking back in the late 1990's when it was released in cinemas. As I remember, fantasy-seeking audiences back then went for blazing guns and bleak dystopian landscapes, pleather jumpsuits and characters with names like some sort of neo-retro-visitation of ancient mythos, and it is to their detriment that so many of them missed The Thirteenth Floor back in its initial release. Telling the tale of a murder of one of the brilliant creators of a virtual world so real its denizens believe they are alive, The Thirteenth Floor visits film noir as readily as vintage sci-fi, and does it with a stylish tip of the hat back to some of the biggest films of both genres, from Blade Runner to The Maltese Falcon, and yet as it does it never loses its own claim to classic status. Its twists and turns gyrate through a story that concludes nowhere near where it began and yet somehow ties up every loose end before its magnificently satisfying conclusion. For its recreations of the gritty Los Angeles of yesteryear to its journeys into the human future, The Thirteenth Floor impressed me as much as those Facebook recommendations said it might. It's a cool movie.

    5 out of 5 stars 13th Floor   April 4, 2009

A movie that will challenge your perception of what you think is your reality. Is anything real or are you just a holographic program...as hinted in "The Matrix" trilogy. I found this movie on video several years ago, and in watching it again, decided the DVD was a must. Definitely a movie for my library. I am very selective about what I buy. I so enjoy movies that challenge your mind to question what has been taken for granted. If you liked "The Matrix", here is another mind bender for you.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite sci-fi movies   March 29, 2009
    J. Dykstra (Roswell, NM)
This movie is similar to the Matrix but much less outrageous. The sci-fi plot is very interesting in itself and makes for one of those movies in which there are many unexpected surprises. However, I think what really makes the movie are the virtual reality recreations of Los Angeles in the 1930s. It adds a lot of character to the film. The only thing that's a little odd is how the main character is always very sullen and almost unemotional. He has an incredibly resigned an unexcitable air to him. Eventually, this sort of ends up fitting, but at first it seems a little odd. In any case, I love this movie and highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars What was that song?   February 25, 2009
    Robert G. Reilich
This was a great movie. 7 minutes into it, Fuller goes into a bar and calls Douglas on the payphone. Does anyone know the singer or name of the song playing on the jukebox in the background, its great. Would like to get it. Thank you. [...]
