Amazon.com essential video This sprawling epic of bloodshed and excess, Brian De Palma's update of the classic 1932 crime drama by Howard Hawks, sparked controversy over its outrageous violence when released in 1983. Scarface is a wretched, fascinating car wreck of a movie, starring Al Pacino as a Cuban refugee who rises to the top of Miami's cocaine-driven underworld, only to fall hard into his own deadly trap of addiction and inevitable assassination. Scripted by Oliver Stone and running nearly three hours, it's the kind of film that can simultaneously disgust and amaze you (critic Pauline Kael wrote "this may be the only action picture that turns into an allegory of impotence"), with vivid supporting roles for Steven Bauer, Michelle Pfeiffer, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, and Robert Loggia. Universal's special edition digital video disc includes a documentary about the making of the film that features numerous interviews and several deleted scenes. --Jeff Shannon

Being A Gangster Not All Fun-And-Games! April 29, 2009 Craig Connell (Lockport, NY USA) I found this to be an interesting character study of a Cuban who comes to Miami and becomes a big drug dealer, rising from poverty to become a wealthy big-shot....and then destroying himself. The real down side to living the life of crime is detailed in the story. Near the end, Pacino is going to bed each night with a gun under his pillow. Anyone who thinks being a big-time crook is "the life," should watch this film and pay attention. The movie got panned at the time of its release for its excesses in profanity and violence....but now since we've all become desensitized with decades of this stuff, the film is now almost reaching "cult status." Now those same flip-flop national critics like it. Amazing. At the time of this movie's release, Al Pacino ("Tony Montana") probably set a new Hollywood record for using the f-word in a mainline film, Now it's topped by anyone who performs in a Martin Scorcese film. Pacino's wife, "Elvira" played by the beautiful Michelle Peiffer, wasn't a lot more clean-mouthed than her husband. She got really brutal as the film wore on. If that language is no problem for you, you'll find the story quite interesting and a good study of how paranoia must wind up haunting most gangsters.
You Already Know About It April 12, 2009 S.Papstein (Eureka CA) Alright, since this review is 20 some years too late, you should have already heard by now how great Scarface is. Even if you have been living under a rock, still, you probably have heard about the movies legacy. So I'll spare you the overly enthusiasic spiel about it's amazing tale of a true rags-to-richs scenario. I wont bore you about how Oliver Stone created rich and deep, 3 dimensional characters and how they were excently brought to life by the elite acting talents of Al Pacino, Michelle Pfieffer and Steven Bauer. I wont ramble on and on about Scarface's intesnity, and gritty portrayal of a lifestyle that we should try everything we can to stop. No, I wont do that, I will talk about whats the bad stuff in Scarface........ummmmm............it's a tad perdictable from time to time.
