    Editorial Reviews:

    Amazon.com essential video
John Hughes's popular 1985 teen drama finds a diverse group of high school students--a jock (Emilio Estevez), a metalhead (Judd Nelson), a weirdo (Ally Sheedy), a princess (Molly Ringwald), and a nerd (Anthony Michael Hall)--sharing a Saturday in detention at their high school for one minor infraction or another. Over the course of a day, they talk through the social barriers that ordinarily keep them apart, and new alliances are born, though not without a lot of pain first. Hughes (Sixteen Candles), who wrote and directed, is heavy on dialogue but he also thoughtfully refreshes the look of the film every few minutes with different settings and original viewpoints on action. The movie deals with such fundamentals as the human tendency toward bias and hurting the weak, and because the characters are caught somewhere between childhood and adulthood, it's easy to get emotionally involved in hope for their redemption. Preteen and teenage kids love this film, incidentally. The DVD release includes production notes, cast and crew bios, widescreen presentation, Dolby sound, closed captioning, optional French and Spanish soundtracks, and optional Spanish subtitles. --Tom Keogh

3 out of 5 stars Funny, Laid-Back, But Hopelessly Trivial   June 15, 2009
    Untitled (nowhere)
The Breakfast Club is quite the movie when it comes to depicting teenagers in some parts, and even today. Many teenagers who fall into cliques in these days really aren't the stereotypical personal of their namesakes. The Breakfast Club deals with five teenagers, who, after spending a Saturday in detention, realize that their clique label is not as accurate as it initially seems.

The Breakfast Club, as a movie, is enjoyable. There are plenty of scenes that could never been replicated (the dance scene is a classic), as well as some sharp, biting humor. Another great use of humor is the way they keep themselves from getting bored, such as making a sculpture out of cups and pencils, something some of us must have done sooner or later. The vibe (cool description, eh?) that High School carries (some good, some bad) is pretty prevalant here. The Breakfast Club is a bit manipulative, as I think the ending is a bit too unrealistic regarding teenagers. It's just too feel-good for my tastes. However, while the ending seems to stray a bit into Hollywood relationship fix-ups, the beginning of the movie is nothing but. To say that The Breakfast Club is an enjoyable movie is

Still, I can't quite but think the Breakfast Club is really worth the two hours or so, and definitely not worth watching again. I dont' really dislike the film (I enjoyed it, remember?), but, do I really care about five teenagers (who are basically fiction) and their troubles and bonding? If anything, wasting two hours or more watching the troubles and of five teenagers is a joke. I'd rather go out and hang out and make friends in the real world, many of them that don't fit into any cliques (or maybe are labeled, but really don't live to their labels), then watch someone else. If anything, spending the hours maybe making my relationships better is a lot more important and useful than the fictional group called The Breakfast Club's relationship.

I'm not quite sure to reccomend watching it or not. Now, I don't view people who enjoy this movie more than once as someone who has no life. However, I came up a bit empty-handed, and, as a result of this new thought about the easily reachable plot that can be experienced first hand, have no interest in otherwise seemingly enjoyable movies such as The Graduate. ANd it will certainly convince me that Friends is the nadir of television, with no wit (but that's another story), no brains, and all trivial bull_____.

    4 out of 5 stars A Review for the B Club   April 18, 2009
    Teen in between

A group of actors most popular from the 80's, before my time as I am only 15. It was cool to see these actors when they were younger, I have seen other movies they were in, but at their current age. This is high school, no matter where you live. So much of what they did and said is true, even so many years later. There were many life lessons in it, speaking teenager life. Most kids are the way they are for a reason.

What a movie!!! Great movies usually have two or three lines you had memorized after seeing it. The Breakfast Club have two and many more. What a great cast to protray what a Saturday afternoon in detention would be like although I haven't experienced that in my time in high school. Judd Nelson's performance as John blows me away as the burnout. One of the best lines in the whole movie is Ally Sheedy telling them her reason for being there in Saturday detention; "I had nothing better to do." The movie is awesome and another great movie by John Hughes. The cast is absolutely stellar!! Two thumbs way up!!!

Because this is a review that is supposed to be on the DVD itself, I'll begin by saying that the special features may not be ultimately all that expansive. But for any fan who wanted to know a little bit more about this fantastic movie and the actors in it, the documentaries contained and the feature commentary by Judd Nelson and Anthony Michael Hall are great supplemental knowledge. The picture is clearer than the original and the sound quality seems to be much better in the film itself.

There are never enough words to describe how fantastic this movie is. It speaks to multiple generations of young people without condescention.

Honestly, I would recommend it to anyone starting high school or better yet, anyone who has already gotten to know a year or two of it.

Please do not be put off by its R-rating. The issues and kind of language that gave it this rating can be heard in the span of one day in high school. It's tastefully done and packed with emotion.
I cannot praise this film enough.

    Classic movie!
