Two years before he let it all hang out in Boogie Nights, former rapper and Calvin Klein underwear model Mark Wahlberg played the psychotic boyfriend in this derivative but surprisingly effective thriller, aptly described by producer Brian Grazer as "Fatal Attraction for teens." Reese Witherspoon plays Nicole Walker, the unwitting teenager who gets the hots for David McCall (Wahlberg). David only seems like a nice guy until he gets upset by the girl's overly protective father. That's when hell breaks loose and the love-struck Romeo turns into a deadly threat who just won't go away. You'd think this kind of material would be beneath the talents of a fine director like James Foley (whose credits include At Close Range and Glengarry Glen Ross), but Foley gives the film just the right blend of style and tension to match Wahlberg's breakthrough role as an all-too-believable teenage maniac. You might feel silly afterwards, but don't be surprised if you find yourself getting caught up in the expertly manipulative suspense. --Jeff Shannon

Fear starring Mark Wahlberg and Reese Witherspoon is a wicked thriller to say the least. The film also stars William Petersen and Amy Brenneman. Wahlberg plays a psycho boyfriend and Witherspoon is very effective as the naive teenager he falls for. I like this film, some of the scenes seem kinda silly now but overall Fear will keep you coming back for another viewing, enjoy!

This was a good movie. It was very much full of suspense. Good story too. One thing it definitely supported was my strong conviction in the right to own a gun. This is a movie is a must see for a candy*** liberal do-gooder who doesn't believe in the private ownership of guns. That person might have a changed view on gun control after viewing this (I hope).

I thought this movie was an excellent and very realistic production! Not only is it realistic, but it reaches into the mind of the psycho, which I thoroughly enjoyed.
This David McCall character strangely resembles a real life counterpart: David Wayne McCall.
There's a real life convicted serial rapist named David W. McCall, who was convicted as a juvenile in South Bend/Notre Dame, IN Indiana, in St. Joseph County: David Wayne McCall was convicted at age 15 for serially and violently raping several St. Mary's College Students in the late 1970's.
McCall is accused of multiple additional rape cases in Plano, Dallas, & Irving Texas, and is still suspected of a rape / murder case in Indiana where he allegedly murdered CAROLYN SCHINKE. I knew him in grade and middle school at Clay Middle School and Clay high school where he was an award winning wrestler trained by (Wrestling Coach Glen Nelson) and he [Mccall] always seemed quite violent. I can't speak on McCall's overall guilt except for his juvenile record: but I amazed he's on the loose after so many known crimes: kidnapping, sexual assault, possibly murder... he's known to especially stalk female joggers! So, beware Texas! You don't want this guy loose and in your backyard.

I knew guys like David (Mark Wahlberg) in highschool. They were always in fights, constantly breaking the law, and kept most of the student body in mortal terror. Ah, memories! These guys weren't just bullies, they were stone-cold criminals. FEAR presents an excellent view of one such super-thug in Wahlberg's character. He is a cruel, explosive keg of rage and fury. At first, when trying to woo young Nicole (Reese Witherspoon from American Psycho), David appears sweet, sensitive, and understanding. Well, it's all just a a means to an end. David only wants to have Nicole, to possess her. His sugary words in the beginning are meant only as bait. Nicole's dad (William Peterson) is suspicious of David from the start. He goes out of his way to keep him away from his daughter, which draws them closer together. Ultimately, Nicole must (and boy, does she!) see David for what he truly is for herself. Her fantasies must be shattered before it's too late. Unfortunately, David is very persistant, and will not give up so easily. He is crazy, which enables him to do as he pleases without rules, limits, or much thought. He's a scary guy! I thoroughly enjoyed FEAR and recommend it as a great thriller. Yep, I often wonder what happened to the Davids I went to school with. Prison? Dead? Or worse, are they out there now, destroying more lives as adults? Brrrr...
SOLID THRILLER WITH A VERY GOOD CAST! February 18, 2008

This is a little known film from the early 90's. The movie takes it's time to flesh out the characters and to build some tension, but when it lets loose, it delivers! Mark Wahlberg gives a very chilling performance as a class 'A' nut job in this above average thriller. It smells like TV, but it's much better than that. Reese Witherspoon and the rest of the cast are very good as well. I rate it 3 1/2 stars.
