Amazon.com A glossy romantic comedy, The Best Man centers on four college friends and the women in their lives, all brought back together for a wedding. Taye Diggs (How Stella Got Her Groove Back) plays the title character, a young writer whose first novel is a barely fictionalized account of his college days, featuring barely fictionalized versions of all his friends. This novel hasn't yet been released, but ambitious TV producer Nia Long (Soul Food) has snagged an advance copy in the hopes of getting an early interview with Diggs. Unfortunately, when this advance copy begins circulating among the college gang, they discover it reveals some secrets that may have a disastrous effect on the wedding. The Best Man features a handsome, charming cast and a propulsive story, but the female characters are poorly developed and the male banter is, to say the least, chauvinistic. This banter is mostly to comic effect, but by the end it still leaves a sour taste that the movie's happy ending doesn't counter. With a particularly strong performance by Terrence Howard as an aimless but relentlessly honest member of the college quartet. --Bret Fetzer

One of the best movies featuring African-Americans that I've ever seen... May 21, 2009 Part-Time "Drama" Lover (Washington, DC, USA) I saw this movie for the first time back in my undergraduate years and this story still touches me and I am in my thirties. I believe this film will become a timeless classic.
Best Man ~ A Classic!!! February 7, 2009 Someone Who Cares (Pasadena, CA) The Best Man is a great movie. For Taye Diggs, Morris Chestnut, and Terrence Howard, it is truly one of the highlights of their careers. It has a great blend of comedy and drama and a handful of moments you'll be bringing up in "Remember when" conversation for years to come. And as for movies that center around relationship drama, this movie is for guys too. This is the type of chick-movie that will get guys laughing outloud at the screen and getting sucked into the "What's going to happen next" drama. The icing on the cake is that it shows African-Americans in a positive light, with careers and identities that ate not stereotypical; and even the characters that aren't the most inspiring, by the end of the movie you'll take pride in their triumph and be rooting for them all. The Best Man is truly a great movie. One to add to any collection.
Decent Movie September 14, 2008 Amber (Georgia) This movie isn't one of my favorites but it's not a bad movie. The acting is very good though I'm not too fond of the storyline though. Overall its an okay movie, just don't believe all the hype or you may be a little disappointed.
The Best Man June 30, 2008 Erica Thomas (Columbus, IN) I have the VHS, but I wanted the DVD so I could see it better and get all the extra things that come on DVDs now.
Quality Black Film June 7, 2008 Ciarra Logan 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
It's hard to find quality black films these days. And by quality I mean movies with substance and originality. The Best Man contains both. It also has a smart, clever script, a well rounded cast, and some pretty funny dialogue. This isn't your typical black film about gang violence or life in the hood. The Best Man has class and style. It's a smooth ride from beginning to end. The plot is intriguing; a group of old college friends reunite for a wedding. Their journey is heaped with dirty secrets, heated romances, and bitter rivalries. Every actor is cast perfectly in their role. Terrence Howard is hilarious as a promiscuous playboy. Nia Long is great as the sultry, seductive other woman. Morris Chestnut is very convincing as a slightly arrogant, extremely masculine, professional athlete. And Taye Diggs is our charming and adorable, yet incredibly naive protagonist. All of the characters make poor choices throughout the movie, but we never stop rooting for them. The movie balances out the right amount of comedy with just enough drama. Very enjoyable. Highly recommended.
