Amazon.com essential video Jane Campion's The Piano struck a deep chord (if you'll excuse the expression) with audiences in 1993, who were mesmerized by the film's rich, dreamlike imagery. It is the story of a Scottish woman named Ada (Holly Hunter), who has been mute since age 6 because she simply chose not to speak. Ada travels with her daughter Flora (Anna Paquin) and her beloved piano to a remote spot on the coast of New Zealand for an arranged marriage to a farmer (Sam Neill). She gives piano lessons to a gruff neighbor (Harvey Keitel) who has Maori tattoos on his face, and, well, things develop from there. The picture takes on a powerful dream logic that simply defies synopsis. It's a breathtakingly beautiful and original achievement from Campion, a unique stylist. The Piano won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival and Oscars for Hunt, Paquin, and Campion's screenplay. --Jim Emerson

Don't mistake this for a 'regular romantic tale' ! March 7, 2010 Ankur Mukherjee An amazing, overwhelming film that really manages to grab your attention right from the beginning. Holly Hunter manages to express a lot with her eyes, she performs with extreme vigor, passion and flamboyancy, you can't take your eyes off her, every moment she manages to convey something or the other to the viewer, Sam Neill and Harvey Keitel are excellent. The film starts with a normal slow pace but gets very dark and bold slowly. The score is beautiful, the chemistry between every co-star is excellent in the film, the film doesn't emphasize on romance or just passionate tales, there is much more than that as the film gets very bold in terms of human sexuality and can be disturbing to the viewer at times. Moreover, the film is a pure example of neat acting and direction, beautiful locations and a priceless Piano score makes the film worthwhile.
Boring - February 26, 2010 Loyd E. Eskildson (Phoenix, AZ.) There's little in the plot to maintain interest, and no understanding of the background provided. For example, What were these people doing in New Zealand? Why did the woman come to New Zealand in first place - I know it was for marriage, but weren't there some better alternatives? What was the background of some of the characters? (Overall, they seemed like boors and louts.) Anyway, it was difficult to understand much of the dialogue (too soft, mumbled and accented) - I wouldn't recommend this film to anyone. Holly Hunter (Ada, the mute love interest) is a good actress but most of the scenes were eyes darting back and forth. You get dizzy watching.
Also, the ending of her favorite piano is odd and did not make sense - she gets a new one later. Why is a body tied to the old piano? Is it a symbol of Ada's former personality?
The best part of the movie was the New Zealand scenery, greens, dark blues and purple.
One of the best movies I've ever seen February 1, 2010 Phoebe (Montreal) I agree with all the interesting and insightful comments that people have offered about this astonishing film. What I can't understand is why "The Piano" has been discontinued! I pray that I'll never damage my DVD.
Excellent Movie December 16, 2009 Kimberly S. Turner (Florida) I love this movie. Very happy I finally found it. Holly Hunter is excellent. For a woman of few words, she send a very powerful message. The scernery is beautiful. Makes me want to go to New Zealand.

An excellent story - Holly Hunter does a superior job at her part. I've always liked Sam Neill's work, and Harvey Keitel fits his part so well. Anna Paquin as the little girl connects with the plot in a special way. And a great surprise end!
