Sometimes it's hard to tell if The Mask (or Jim Carrey's in-your-face mugging in general) is actually funny, or just bizarre and grotesque. And sometimes it just doesn't matter. Carrey plays a shy, Jerry Lewis-like nerd who discovers an ancient mask that magically transforms him into a green-faced, zoot-suited Tex Avery cartoon character with no inhibitions. As Roger Ebert said of Carrey in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, the actor performs "as if he's being clocked on an Energy-O-Meter, and paid by the calorie expended." If that's your kind of humor, you'll love The Mask; if not, you may need a valium or two to sit through this one. --Jim Emerson

5 out of 5 stars The Mask   June 25, 2009
    Carol Schlotterbeck (Kokomo, IN)
I have this on VHS, but decided that since I use it in English summer school class in conjunction with Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, I should have it on DVD. I love this film. It is fun and good overcomes evil and guy gets girl.

3 out of 5 stars so so   May 22, 2009

I also own the DVD version and I most say that I prefer that version to the blu-ray version, in the other hand the blu-ray is HD of curse so no complain there.
That's way I give a neutral score to this blu-ray.

5 out of 5 stars One Of My All Time Favourites   May 18, 2009
    Steven Stewart (steveo.stewart@hotmail.co.uk)
Jim Carrey will always be a favourite actor of mine. He's one of the only actors that I will go out of my way to watch their films and "The Mask" is a supreme representation of the ability of Carrey's physical comedy. "The Mask" originally started out as a dark horse comic series back in the 1980s and as the movie focuses around a mask that takes over the wearer and rids them of their social inhibitions. It's believed to have been originally created as a cross between Batman villain, The Joker and Steve Ditko's Creeper. The comic contained quite a bit of violence which was toned down a lot in the movie to cater to a younger audience.

The movie plot focuses around loveable loser Stanley Ipkiss (Carrey) who's down on his luck until, one day he meets the divinely beautiful Tina (Cameron Diaz) who comes into the bank where Stanley works to secretly filming the vault for a potential break in by her mobster boyfriend, Dorian (Peter Greene). After a bad night after being refused entry into a club, Stanley comes across a mysterious mask floating in the river. He takes it home and tries it on only to be completely taken over by it and becomes a completely different, green faced super powered antihero. These new powers get Stanley into a whole heap of trouble that he simply doesn't need.

This is by far one of my favourite films and it was rightly deserving of its massive financial and critical success upon its release. Featuring some amazing special effects for its time and truly utilising all of the talents Carrey could offer, this is truly an all round entertaining masterpiece of comedic cinema. This was the same year as Dumb & Dumber and Ace Ventura which shot Carrey into the stratosphere of superstardom and rightly so. The majority of scenes involving the masked version of Ipkiss take on a very cartoon like imagery to it as the character is a fan of cartoons and this transfers into his super powered alter-ego.

Really the primary interest of the film is based around a man and the mask that allows him to express his true feelings without fear of repercussions. The Mask also teaches Stanley that he should be more impulsive and not such a nice guy as nice guys finish last. There is sort of a sub plot that blends well into Stanley's story leading to the end of the mobster and his girlfriend. He becomes suspicious that she helped Stanley rob a bank originally planned by Dorian's crew, but they were beaten to the punch by the masked alter-ego. It's a nice way of moving the story along but I found the mob side of the story quite boring and the film as a whole could have done without it.

Along with Carrey, Cameron Diaz is an amazing choice as the love interest. Although she's still very beautiful today, there's something to her in this movie that makes her a lot more appealing. Maybe it's her damp breasts introduced to us at the start of the film or maybe it's because of her dazzling legs, again introduced to us at the start. Peter Greene's character became quite annoying throughout the film and did drag it down quite a bit but even with him this film does manage to remain a 5 star movie that can be enjoyed by all.

I would say you should check this film out as soon as possible and if you haven't seen it already then you really haven't lived.

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious comedy by Jim Carrey and definitely better than the sequel   May 1, 2009
    Jennifer A. Everhart
Here is a great flick that is sure to cause boughts of laughter. It is about a short tempered, down-on-his-luck bank worker Stanley Ipkiss (Jim Carrey) whose friends with Charlie Schumaker (Richard Jeni). Little does he know that his life is about to change when he finds a mystic mask that transforms him into a wacky green-faced superhero. There is a crime wave in Edge City led by crime lord Dorian Tyrell (Peter Greene) plotting to overthrow his superior Niko (Orestes Matacena) and take over Edge City. Tyrell's former fiance Tina Carlyle (Cameron Diaz) falls for Stanley while a police detective Lt. Mitch Kellaway (Peter Riegert) investigates the events of the city. Dorian tricks Peggy Brant (Amy Yasbeck) into luring Ipkiss into a trap with a prize of $50,000. Tyrell turns him in to the police from a bank robbery earlier. Ipkiss escapes from prison and convinces Kellaway to help him. Tyrell plots to use the mask to launch an attack at Niko during the charity ball at the Coco Bongo. Stanley as the Mask saves Tina, defeats Tyrell, and saves the city. The trio discard the mask into the river in the end, setting the stage for the terrible sequel, Son of the Mask. The original film was really funny and wacky. The visual effects did use a little bit of CGI, but only for the cliche cartoon antics of the film. Jim Carrey was hilarious as usual. Cameron Diaz makes her big screen debut as well. If you are looking for a funny comic book based film with Carrey, this is the real deal, but please avoid the awful sequel at all costs!

    5 out of 5 stars S-S-S-S-Smokin Movie!   April 26, 2009

I am only halfway through and I already love it. My favorite part is where Stanley puts the Mask on for the 1st time. You can buy a replica of the mask on eBay for a decent price. I am at the part where the cops are investigating Stanley's apartment after he stole all that money and his pajamas were torn. The girl said that his tie is like a Rorschach inkblot test (not to be confused with the Watchmen character). My 3 favorite masks are as follows. 3: Joker Bank Robber, 2: Rorschach, 1: The Mask. I recomend this movie.
