Amazon.com Another John Grisham legal thriller comes to the screen, pairing Denzel Washington and Julia Roberts in a film directed by Alan J. Pakula, who is known for dark-hued suspense pictures such as Klute, The Parallax View, All the President's Men, and Presumed Innocent. The Pelican Brief isn't up to the level of those films, but it is a perfectly entertaining movie about a law student (Roberts) whose life is endangered when she discovers evidence of a conspiracy behind the killings of two Supreme Court justices. She enlists the help of an investigative reporter (Washington) and the two become fugitives. The charisma and chemistry of the leads goes a long way toward compensating for the story's shortcomings, as does a truly impressive supporting cast that includes Sam Shepard, John Heard, James B. Sikking, Tony Goldwyn, Stanley Tucci, Hume Cronyn, John Lithgow, William Atherton, and Robert Culp. --Jim Emerson
Product Description TWO SUPREME COURT JUSTICES HAVE BEEN ASSASSINATED. ONE LONE LAW STUDENT HAS STUMBLED UPON THE TRUTH. AN INVESTIGATIVE REPORTER WANTS HER STORY. EVERYONE ELSE WANTS HER DEAD. SHE CONFIDES IN GRAY GRANTHAM WHAT SHE HAS WRITTEN IN A LEGAL BRIEF ABOUT A COVER-UP THAT EXTENDS TO THE HIGHEST LEVELS OF GOVERNMENT.

One Movie, Two Sides June 18, 2009 jessjess There are some movies I can see needing two discs. The Lord of the Rings for example. Very long movie... two discs. Okay. The Pelican Brief? Really? It's less than 2.5 hours? Can't fit it all on one side of the disc? I know of many a three hour movie that all fit just fine on one disc, one side. I like the movie well enough, I guess, but I don't know if it's worth the hassle of flipping the disc over.
TELL ME I WON'T HAVE TO FLIP THIS OVER TO FINISH May 23, 2009 SunnyATL (Atlanta, GA) One reason I sold my copy of this movie is the idiocrasy of how I had to get up and flip the disc over to finish the film. Totally messed up the flow. Can someone please tell me if the Blu-ray version has it all on one side, or am I going to have to get up and down to watch it all the way through?
Pelican Brief April 7, 2009 Pass Time Reader Great movie and although it is an older one, what a good watch. I did, however, return the first one as it only played for half the movie and Amazon was TERRIFIC with the return. What a great company to deal with when you have defective merchandise! The next one I recieved did the same thing and on a whim, I turned the DVD over and it played to completion. I do not fault Amazon and with the cost being so inexpensive, I chose to keep the DVD.
The Good & Bad Of The Pelican Brief April 6, 2009 Craig Connell (Lockport, NY USA) Some of things I really appreciated from this political thriller was (1) no sappy romance taking away from the suspense and story; (2) very little profanity; (3) a number of interesting scenes that kept your attention for the full 141 minutes; (4) solid acting by the two leads, Denzel Washington and Julia Roberts; (5) nice visuals and nice sound. What I didn't appreciate was the usual Hollywood amount of Liberal agendas, some subtle, some not so subtle. The message that anyone against saving pelicans is either crooked or a violent thug is preposterous. Early on, we hear a TV broadcaster proclaiming that the killings of two Supreme Court justices might have been by some group that also bombed abortion clinics, ACLU offices, etc. Of course - villainous right wingers hurting good-guy left wingers - what else? Isn't that the way it's always portrayed in the movies? Too bad that bias political propaganda is in here because most of this film is just a very good suspense film and well done at that. Washington and Roberts are both fun to watch and they are up against so many suspicious-looking characters that it's a paranoid viewer's delight. They keep you guessing who you can trust and who you can't, which is fun, and helps make the time on this movie fly past.
Enjoyable Movie March 19, 2009 Robert C. Porter Pelican Brief was a flick that I thoroughly enjoyed & the dvd itself was in good shape .
