Amazon.com There's a dark underpinning of meanness and a lack of humanity contained within several of the short films in Short 6: Insanity. The animated "Bad Plant" and "Billy's Balloon" are both misanthropic contributions, and only "Franky Goes to Hollywood," which documents a day in the life and career of the dog who starred in Armageddon, and the Sound Bit featurette, "Beyond the Rhythm," really transcend the uncompassionate discord on display in lesser doses in the remaining seven films. "Blue City," a tinted look at the lives of four people on a collision course in the inner city, received several awards at a variety of film festivals, and "Midnight Dance," a clever Irish cartoon from John McCloskey, is on par with Tim Burton's and Edward Gorey's twisted visions. --Paula Nechak

Shorts..But Sweets.... September 4, 2003 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This review refers to "Short 6 - Insanity",DVD edition(Warner Bros)...It never ceases to amaze me how a writer, director(often the same person), a camera man and as little as one actor can convey in just a few minutes a great story or idea. "Short 6" is a terrific example of these works and a good selection depicting a wide variety of short subject material. "Insanity" is a good subtitle for this one as the films here range from the comic to the surreal. The films are as diverse as their creators. Wonderfully animated shorts "Billy's Balloon"(good things gone bad), and "Midnight Dance"(a waltz with some ghostly figures) will keep you captivated and make you wish they were longer. "Frankie Goes To Hollywood" is delightful and will keep you smiling as you spend some time with the famous bull dog from the film "Armageddon", along with his co-stars, Bruce Willis, Steve Buscemi and Billy Bob Thornton. "Bovine Vendetta" may [scare you] some but "El Banquette" will really get your attention. And probably one the favorites of the film festivals is "Blue City", a beautifully filmed piece about 4 people whose lives are about to connect. There are nine pieces in all ranging in time from 2 minutes to 19 minutes. The DVD is grouped by catagories, and each catagory has its own menu to navigate. Some have director commentary or production notes. There are also some "commercials" for Timex, which I found cute the first couple of times, but by the 5th time it was annoying.Other than that little complaint and the fact that there are no subtitles or closed captions to make this enjoyable to more viewers,I found this to be an entertaining peek at some fine filmaking by some creative minds that are sure to bring us more entertaining film in the future. The quality of the DVD is very good. Nice picture(some in widescreen, some in full)excellent sound ranging from Dolby Dig 2.0 surround to 5.1. If you enjoy independent films, that are short but sweet or are looking for something out of the ordinary, this is a good selection. Thank you and enjoy.....Laurie
Could have been much better October 16, 2001 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
To me this has been one of the most disappointing Short collections I've bought. I say that because of the others I've bought I usually love all of the short films, but of this one I LOVED Billy's Balloon, Blue City and Midnight Dance. Black Coffee was not bad, but mostly what I liked about it was one the dance songs in the soundtrack that I haven't heard since I was in high school (which wasn't that long ago). I am ashamed to admit (as a Latino woman) that the Latin-American short only inspired this reaction from me: cool camerawork... hey, it's from Mexico, wadda ya know... hey, that's the guy from La Ley de Herodes!...and then I fell asleep. I tried to watch it again on another occassion, but it was impossible.
A Great Addition To Any Cinephiles Library December 29, 1999 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I bought this out of intrigue and I love short films. Short 6-Insanity, is high quality dvd with features galore for dvdphiles and the films are great entertainment to anyone who has a taste for the bizzare. I am especially fond of the short "Midnight Dance" which is an amazing and beautiful animated film.
A great collection of short films! November 10, 1999 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This is a very nice collection of short films. Animation fans should find "The Bad Plant", "Billy's Balloon", and "Nocturne" especially satisfying. They are three of the best animation festival shorts of the past year.
Agreed, wonderful films + wrong region code November 2, 1999 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
I am not speaking for my own short, Black Coffee, but the other shorts on SHORT 6 are very rewarding. I must say I am very proud to be in such great company.Regarding wrong RC. I received my copy last Friday and checked it out today. Short 6 can be played on our DVD players in Europe. So I hope Amazon changes the region code ASAP.
