    Editorial Reviews:

    Amazon.com essential video
Platoon put writer-turned-director Oliver Stone on the Hollywood map; it is still his most acclaimed and effective film, probably because it is based on Stone's firsthand experience as an American soldier in Vietnam. Chris (Charlie Sheen) is an infantryman whose loyalty is tested by two superior officers: Sergeant Elias (Willem Dafoe), a former hippie humanist who really cares about his men (this was a few years before he played Jesus in Martin Scorsese's The Last Temptation of Christ), and Sergeant Barnes (Tom Berenger), a moody, macho soldier who may have gone over to the dark side. The personalities of the two sergeants correspond to their combat drugs of choice--pot for Elias and booze for Barnes. Stone has become known for his sledgehammer visual style, but in this film it seems perfectly appropriate. His violent and disorienting images have a terrifying immediacy, a you-are-there quality that gives you a sense of how things may have felt to an infantryman in the jungles of Vietnam. Platoon won Oscars for best picture and director. --Jim Emerson

    Description
Winner* of 4 Academy Awards(r), including Best Picture, and based on the first-hand experience of Oscar(r)-winning** director Oliver Stone, Platoon is powerful, intense and starkly brutal. "Harrowingly realistic and completely convincing" (Leonard Maltin), it is "a dark, unforgettable memorial" (The Washington Post) to every soldier whose innocence was lost in the war-torn jungles of Vietnam. Chris Taylor (Charlie Sheen) is a young, naive American who, upon his arrival in Vietnam, quickly discovers that he must do battle not only with the Viet Cong, but also with the gnawing fear, physical exhaustion and intense anger growing within him. While his two commanding officers (Oscar(r)-nominated*** Tom Berenger and Willem Dafoe) draw a fine line between the war they wage against the enemy and the one they fight with each other, the conflict, chaos and hatred permeate Taylor, suffocating his realities and numbing his feelings to man's highest value life.

5 out of 5 stars "Rejoice, O Young Man in Thy Youth".   May 25, 2009
Movie Lover (Beech Grove, IN United States)
I'll tell you right now that when it comes to war movies, Oliver Stone doesn't joke around. Out of all the movies i've seen of his, W., JFK, Born on the Fourth of July, this one is the best, and overall the darkest as well. The acting is successful, although no oscar winning performances were given out. Nothing but oscar nominations were given out to the perfomances by Willem Dafoe, and Tom Berenger. Great acting, intense music score by The Era, and great set direction. Detailed and shown dramatically, ever moment of this movie is intense.

I purchased this movie for a friend. I have always been satisfied with my purchases at Amazon. Many items have come from a third party. The description of the item's condition has always been at minimum, the way it was described. I like having price options. Sometimes I want brand new, sometimes it doesn't matter so much.

Anyone who gave this movie 3 stars or lower has a problem.PLATOON is one of the greates war films I have ever seen.Maybe even the best. And yes it does show how the real NAM was.Ity does eqel Saving Pvt. Ryan and all the other great war films out there.Forrest Gump was good but it didn't really show how NAM was.Sorry its so short buts thats all I have to say.

4 out of 5 stars Best War Film I've Ever Seen! Son of "Apocalypse Now".   March 15, 2009

Both literally and figuratively this is the offspring of that other great war movie. Both Martin and Charlie Sheen didn't get awards or nominations for their respective roles although both the supporting actors did give excellent performances. If anyone deserved an Oscar it would have to be Dafoe whose performance is at least as good as Brando's. "Apocalypse Now" took a much longer time to tell the tale of the madness of the Nam but "Platoon" seemed to come straight to the point and in so doing is the more realistic portrayal of what jungle warfare is really like and shows what can go wrong in the case of a dysfunctional platoon.

A weak and incompetent officer is overawed by his diametrically opposite but extremely good at what they do sergeants who with lack of proper leadership decide to take matters into their own hands with disastrous results. Speaking as one who has actually undergone jungle training having served a stint in the infantry I can testify that this film is about as accurate as can be with regards the conditions of jungle warfare. Sheen's character talks about the constant tiredness which I can attest to but I would also add constant hunger as the two things to describe the experience. The two sergeants also show the two types of leaders that grunts face: the one that commands respect by fear and the other that commands respect by charisma and a genuine concern for his men. I'd choose the latter type as if you're gonna put your life on the line, you'd obviously wanna have a leader who gives a damn about what happens to you.

This dvd is well put together as well although it doesn't have any real special features like making-of documentaries and yet the sound quality in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround is good and other than a few white spots in the picture frames at the start, the picture quality for most of the film is pretty good. I would love to see a restored Blu-ray Director's Cut version if possible in the future although this version of the dvd is pretty good as far as standard version dvds go.

Excellent movie and about as realistic a jungle warfare movie as you're ever gonna see makes this highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE BEST WAR PICTURES EVER   March 10, 2009
    Geary A., Jones
I loved this movie when I first saw it in the theater ages ago, and was unaware of Oliver Stone's political leanings, and oddly enough, I still love PLATOON. Generally, war pictures don't appeal to me, but this masterpiece shows soldiers not as stereotypes, but as flesh, and blood human beings dealing with death, and the possibility of it on a daily basis. It is a harrowing, violent, and sometimes tragic tale. Nothing in PLATOON is romanticized, and it is all the more powerful, and unforgettable as a result.
