Amazon.com essential video Emma Thompson scores a double bull's-eye with this marvelous adaptation of Jane Austen's novel. Not only does Thompson turn in a strong (and gently humorous) performance as one of the Dashwood sisters--the one with "sense"--she also wrote the witty, wise screenplay. Austen's tale of 19th-century manners and morals provides a large cast with a feast of possibilities, notably Kate Winslet, in her pre-Titanic flowering, as Thompson's deeply romantic sister. Winslet attracts the wooing of shy Alan Rickman (a nice change of pace from his bad-guy roles) and dashing Greg Wise, while Thompson must endure an incredibly roundabout courtship with Hugh Grant, here in fine and funny form. All of this is doled out with the usual eye-filling English countryside and handsome costumes, yet the film always seems to be about the careful interior lives of its characters. The director, an inspired choice, is Taiwan-born Ang Lee, who brings the same exquisite taste and discreet touch he displayed in his previous Asian films (such as Eat Drink Man Woman). Thompson's script won an Oscar, and 1995 was a fine year for Jane Austen all around: Persuasion was made into an excellent picture, and Emma became the spritzy high school comedy Clueless. --Robert Horton

Most Beautiful & Memorable Movie Version Ever Done May 9, 2009 Suran Lind (Palm Springs, CA) The most wonderfully adapted movie version of Jane Austen's Sense & Sensibility ever made with never-to-be-forgotten characters played by highly acclaimed British actors and actresses with beautiful English landscapes and scenery. Watching this film turned my husband into a huge Jane Austen fan! It is a joy to read this novel and then watch it vividly brought to life on the screen by such fine and accomplished (and stunning) actors.
Nutty about Sense and Sensibility April 11, 2009 Ayescha Gasdorf (Berlin, Germany) I love Emma Thompson. I love Hugh Grant. I love Kate Winslet. I L-O-V-E stories of when gentleman were charasmatic, women were considered dainty yet tough, rules were elegant, and the scenary is breath-taking. This is one of the feel-good movies I love to snuggle with, when disappointed by "boring" love
BORING March 30, 2009 Reza Ganjavi 0 out of 6 found this review helpful
I did manage to see the whole drama but it was slow and boring. The pictures were sometimes interesting. Nice country side. Not worth spending 2.25 hours on it unless you play guitar at same time...
Mediocre March 21, 2009 JD (Augusta, GA USA) 0 out of 4 found this review helpful
This movie was okay. Emma Thompson looks too old to play Elinor. I hated the character Marianne. The men are blah...nothing special or exciting about them. Pride and Prejudice has better characters.
Exceedingly good service, and great movie March 21, 2009 Penny Lane The delivery was prompt, as promised! The movie is a gem and was delivered in perfect condition! :-)
