Amazon.com Tom Selleck plays Matthew Quigley, the cowboy hero in this traditional Western, set very untraditionally in Australia. After some macho silliness in the opening minutes, the story settles into a surprisingly evocative tale of Quigley, a sharpshooter who had come to the country to work for a land baron (Alan Rickman) and who is on the mend after a brutal attack. In the company of a woman (Laura San Giacomo) abused by that same baron, Quigley gets his strength and his shooting skills back while healing in the midst of aboriginal people as well as some stunning Australian settings. Director Simon Wincer (Phar Lap) brings a lot of integrity to this rare horse opera from contemporary Hollywood. --Tom Keogh
Description Tom Selleck gives the boldest performance of his career in this "new style, revisionist western with the panoramic scope of a movie epic" (Los Angeles Times). Fierce gunfights, forbidding landscapes, breakneck chasesall hallmarks of the classic westernare reinvented in this hard-pounding actioner that "revitalizes the genre" and comes out "a sure winner" (The Hollywood Reporter). Arriving in Australia with nothing more than a saddle and his prized six-foot Sharps rifle, American sharpshooter Matthew Quigley thinks he's been hired to kill off wild dogs. But when herealizes, instead, that his mission is murderto "eliminate" the Aborigines from a wealthy cattlebaron's landQuigley refuses and quickly turns from hunter to hunted. Forced to wage a savage waragainst his former employer, Quigley proves that no one gets the best of a steely-eyed American gunfighterno one, that is, except the mysterious beauty (Laura San Giacomo, sex, lies, and videotape) who rides by his side and captures his heart.

MATTHEW QUIGLEY IS A COWBOY HERO, AND CORA'S ROY! April 19, 2009 Teresa (NORTH CAROLINA, USA) This is my favorite Tom Selleck movie! I just loved this movie so much! Tom Selleck (Matthew Quigley) is my handsome cowboy hero! Matthew Quigley travels from America to Austrialia to work on the Marston Ranch to hunt and kill wild, dangerous dogs(dingos). At least that is what he thought that he was hired for, but Marston (the ranch owner) had other plans! This is a very good outstanding western, with great shooting, and fight scenes! Matthew also helps save, a very pretty american woman, named Cora, from being taken by Marston's men to be used as a[..]! Cora pretends that she is crazy so that the men will leave her alone, but she is quite taken with Matthew, but she insists his name is Roy! So Matthew for a while, thinks Cora is crazy too! After Matthew finds out that Marston wants him to kill the native Aborigne people, instead of wild dogs, Matthew lets Marston know how he feels about it! Matthew says "NO" in a very special way! Then Matthew gets into big trouble, with all the odds against him, and Cora tries to defend Matthew from Marston's men. Beaten Matthew and Cora ,are taken to the desert, and left to die, by Marston orders! But Marston underestimates Matthew! Matthew fights back, and then the Aborigne people, help save Matthew and Cora's life! Then Matthew and Cora fall in love! My favorite scene in the movie is where Cora is standing on the porch watching Matthew ride away! Awesome! I highly recommend this movie!
A Memorable Western, Eh Mate? April 13, 2009 Craig Connell (Lockport, NY USA) This is a bit a twist: a western in which the setting is Australia, not the United States. Yet, the film features two American characters, played by Tom Selleck and Laura San Giacomo. It's a simple, well-done revenge story with a nice slow-developing romance as the subplot. Meanhile, Alan Rickman, who was good at this sort of thing, plays the hated, despicable villain. The movie is appealing because it has a good mixture of action (and that is mixed, too, not just the same kind of fistfights or gun battles), romance, nice scenery and a little comedy thrown in. Warning: this a rough film in parts with a couple of harrowing scenes, such as people being pushed off cliffs, Selleck brutally beaten several times and wild vicious dingoes threatening San Giacamo and a little baby, but the action never goes on too long. All in all, I found it one of the more memorable westerns I've watched. If for nothing else, the awesome sound of Selleck's Sharp Calibre .44 rifle makes this film hard to forget.
Quigley Down Under March 15, 2009 Justine Steele Quigley Down Under is a story with love and conflict - the human story. Hard times are made easier with humor. Tom Selleck is The Cowboy. Alan Rickman as always, gives an excellent performance. Australia is a beautiful co star.
Quigley Down Under March 6, 2009 Zena M. Hamilton Quigley is one of Tom Seleck's best movies. He is a great actor. I recommand this movie to be in everyones home theater library.
