Amazon.com For fans and newcomers, this boxed set holds a great collection, including all four great movies. The first in the series, Batman (1989), and arguably the best of the four movies, exudes the moodiness of the Dark Knight's character. Tim Burton's direction and Michael Keaton's rendition of Batman are an electrifying combo. Together they capture the sinister atmosphere of Gotham City and Batman's darkness. Jack Nicholson as the fiendish Joker and Kim Basinger as the resourceful and gorgeous Vicki Vale lend their charm. Three years later, in 1992, Burton and Keaton reunited for Batman Returns. This time our pointy-eared hero has to combat two villains: Danny DeVito as the disturbed and freaky Penguin and Michelle Pfeiffer as Catwoman. In Batman Forever (1995), Joel Schumacher gave his direction to the story with Val Kilmer under the cape. Kilmer keeps the moodiness but adds a little panache to his rendition. His archenemies this time are the Riddler (Jim Carrey) and Two-Face (Tommy Lee Jones). Luckily, he enlists the help of the Boy Wonder, Robin (Chris O'Donnell). The final movie in the series, Batman & Robin, is great eye candy, and this time Schumacher returns with George Clooney as the leading man and Chris O'Donnell again as Robin. Together Batman and Robin battle the icy Mr. Freeze (Arnold Schwarzenegger), with a little help from Batgirl (Alicia Silverstone). Delve into the Gotham City world with the Dark Knight to protect you, and don't forget to make lots of popcorn for this Batman marathon. --Samantha Allen Storey

Get It While You Can April 8, 2009 Andrew (Illinois) When I heard this item was being re-released by Warner Brothers, three years after it went out of print, I jumped at the chance to get it. While I haven't viewed both Batman discs, I have viewed all the others. While some of the special features can be repetitive (such as the Heroes & Villains galleries), the featurettes that detail how the films were made are adequate enough to keep your interest, especially the Batman & Robin Special Features disc. Everyone giving an interview (except for Chris O'Donnell) tries to justify the film's existence and creation (ie: the production designer). If you're a fan, this is definitely worth owning.
No one trashed Schumacher's films when they came out!! December 18, 2008 Michael Pettinato (U.S.A.) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Awesome set, Awesome special features, As a fan of these films & reading many reviews here, I think a vast majority of people have their facts wrong, I will go down the line here>>> Batman(1989) This was the film to see that year, I remember it's popularity well, "Indiana Jones" & "Lethal Weapon 2" were both sidelined by this one, Jack Nicholson's Joker was definately over the top, yes he was not a sadist like Heath Ledger's (Dark Knight) Joker, but he didn't hesitate to be sinister either, the hand buzzer scene as well as the "pen is mightier than the sword" scene speaks volumes but Jack was Jack no doubt, Michael Keaton was perfect as Bruce Wayne/Batman, overall the best of the 4 films Batman Returns(1992) Tim Burton's follow-up that was more of the same, but had Christmas overtones, one of my gripes about this one was burying Danny DeVito under a ton of makeup, Burgess Meredith 60's Penguin was normal looking, they couldn't let DeVito's real look be present here??, nonetheless he nails the part & seemed to be having fun here, but then again when does DeVito not have fun in his films, Michelle Pfreiffer was good as Catwoman, but Angelina Jolie seems born to play this part, unfortunately no one had heard of her yet in 1992, however this one is good, but a bit weird, Burton had some screwy visions, Christopher Walkin of course was good in this as well, but when is Walkin not good, Keaton once again returns in this one, & it has some cool features such as the "Face to Face" video, from the film, talk about a sensual video, all in all a good follow up Batman Forever (1995) As one reviewer noted Joel Schmucher has been unfairly criticized for this one, as stated by another reviewer the studio, yes the studio(Warner Bros.) demanded a change in tone, not Schumacher, the real reason Michael Keaton dropped out, not because of Schmacher, Keaton stated in an interview that he met with Schumacher & agreed to this one, even Renee Russo(Lethal Weapon 3 & 4) was set to star in the role of Chase, but Keaton dropped out as a result of Warner's decision to go in a different direction & Russo was also cut loose because the studio, again, not Schumacher considered Russo to old to play opposite Val Kilmer, so Nicole Kidman got the part instead, it amazes me how many people don't know this, but in 1995 "Premiere" Magazine did a piece on this very fact, & the fact that this one had a troubled production with Kilmer butting heads with Schumacher butting heads with the studio, with Tommy Lee Jones demanding not to be upstaged by Jim Carrey, & let us not forget that Carrey was the hottest thing in Hollywood at the time, say what you wnat about this one, I don't recall people trashing it in 1995, I saw it opening day, & believe you me the theatre was packed & everyone from what I could tell was enjoying this, I don't remember any booos & hissses then, why now I have no idea!!, yes this one is a bit cartoonish, but it sold toys just like the studio wanted it too Batman & Robin (1997) Yes, this one gets trashed by everyone, but again, I don't remember it being trashed in 1997, the media couldn't stop talking about it, George Clooney took over for Val Kilmer because according to Joel Schumacher Kilmer was still working on the "Saint" for "Paramount" & "Warner Bros" got impatient, Kilmer's ongoing problems with Schumacher didn't help matters either, Keaton stated that Warner tried to lure him back with a 40 million payday, but Keaton did not want to partisipate in their cartoon vision, as Schumacher stated, the studio once again were trying to market toys, despite this one's flaws you can't overlook the fact that everyone seem to be having fun here, not since "Terminator" had Arnold had such fun with a character, Uma Thurman seem to be having a good time too, Clooney was probably a bit miscast though, but again Kilmer stated he would have done it had Warner let him finish the "Saint", to make Schumacher the fall guy in this to me is ridiculous, remember this is the same guy who directed "St.Elmo's Fire", "The Lost Boys">> one I am sure the haters like, & "Falling Down" with Michael Douglas, if "Batman Forever" had been so bad as everyone claims it to be, first of all I doubt this one would have got made, somthing the haters seem to forget, & if Christopher Nolan had not revived a more darker vision with "Batman Begins" & "The Dark Knight" I doubt Schumacher's films would be as trashed, overall these films are a product of their time, & that is how I see them, Burton's films were a product of the 80's, Schumacher's films a product of the 90's & now Nolan's films a product of the present time
Batman The Motion Picture Anthology 1989-1997 December 13, 2008 Robert Green I have one movie to watch but the ones I have watch are excellent. I would recommend this batman product to anyone who is a Batman fan.
EXCELLENT BOX SET.....THE FILMS RANGE FROM VERY GOOD TO BAD! October 6, 2008 ! MR. KNOW IT ALL ;-b (TRI STATE AREA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Before I reviewed any of these earlier Batman films, I wanted to watch them again. It's hard to not compare them to the newer "Nolan" films, but in their time most of them were very good and entertaining! This box set features all four of the Batman films from 1989 through the 90's on individual two disc editions. The packaging is solid and I like the films being in individual cases. The DVD transfers and extras are excellent and if your a fan of the series, it's well worth picking up. I will review each film as I watch them and add ratings to this review, but will do full reviews on the individual releases. I have not seen The Dark Knight yet,(I know I know!) and I wanted to watch these films again before seeing the "new and improved" version of Batman (The Dark Knight). I think when watching these movies we have to remember that Batman in the late 30's was just a 10 cent comic book for kids, it was many years later was the elaborate back story and psychological aspects were added to the character. I think Burton was trying to capture the feeling of the first comic....he did, but unfortunately some of the TV show found it's way in! Don't get me wrong, I love the TV show for what it is, campy, over the top and fun! It just doesn't work well with the original vision of The Dark Knight. So please take off your jaded judgmental hats and enjoy these films for what they are and remember without the original Superman and Batman movies, films like Blade, Spider-man, Iron Man, Batman Begins and The Dark Knight may have never got off the ground! 1) Batman - 3 1/2 stars 2) Batman Returns - 3 3/4 stars 3) Batman Forever - 2 1/2 stars 4) Batman and Robin - 1 1/2 stars
