Amazon.com Talk about an opening. The first few minutes of John Carpenter's Vampires--in which James Woods's vampire killer leads a dawn raid on a New Mexico "goon nest" of bloodsuckers--not only suggests a horror movie that will not pull any punches, it even evokes some of the more disturbing dream-memories of American Westerns. Muscular and uncompromised, the sequence suggests a new Carpenter classic unraveling before one's eyes. Well, dream on. Things don't quite work out that way, but this is still a film to reckon with. There are a few serious (and surprising) misjudgments on the director's part, particularly a mishandling of Sheryl Lee's role as a prostitute poisoned by the bite of a "master vampire" (who pretty much wiped out Woods's team of goon terminators). But aside from some weaknesses, the action is jolting, the suggested complicity of the Catholic Church in destroying monsters is provocative, and the traces of Howard Hawks's continuing influence on Carpenter's storytelling are in evidence. --Tom Keogh

it sucks June 29, 2009 Kristal Stanley if it wasn't for the fact that the "vampire master" is hot and had the scene of him biting the hot chicks inner thigh, the movie would suck completely. it's garbage. i hate the rest of the retarded characters. hillbillies
I love this movie - Vampires May 27, 2009 A. Montoya (Tulsa, OK USA) I love this movie which is why I bought it. The movie was delivered within days.
BOOM! BANG! BITE! CRASH!... February 25, 2009 Bindy Sue Fronkuenschtein (under the rubble) VAMPIRES is a wacky movie in the same vein as WARLOCK, PROPHESY, or DUSK TO DAWN. It just isn't as well-developed or as much fun to watch. James Woods (Videodrome) is okay as the main vampire-hunter, Jack Crow. His special forces / swat team-like squad of slayers was fairly cool. Maybe they should have survived past the first few minutes! After their massacre at the hands of master-vampire, Valek (Thomas Ian Griffith from The Crow and Alien Resurrection), things get bogged down and a bit slow. Sheryl Lee is decent as Katrina, the unfortunate hooker. Daniel Baldwin doesn't make a complete fool of himself as Crow's faithful companion, Montoya. I just wish there had been more story, more suspense, or even a little mystery. The finale just happens, w/ almost no real satisfactory resolution or final showdown. Not that it could have been any less believable. I mean, eight immortal, nearly invincible master-vampires and their lesser converts against Crow, Montoya, and a priest?? This is a hopeless situation, unless Crow had a hydrogen bomb in his pocket! Anyway, VAMPIRES is enjoyable, if somewhat hokey...
Best Vampire after Bram Stroker's November 29, 2008 Paul Siahaan (Medan, North Sumatra Indonesia) This movie present vampires not as a movie , comic , novel or any literary characters. Instead it manage to make an impression that vampires do exist and live among us. And that imagery itself will get you bone chills
Great vampire flick November 3, 2008 Chrissy K. McVay (North Carolina) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is a great vampire movie with a good balance of suspense and blood. Some stories in the genre are too heavy on the character's personal stories and light on the gore, or vice versa, but not this well written horror. James Woods is a 'suave' and savvy vampire killer who lets his guard down with the most ruthless head vampire he's ever encountered. He finds out too late he's been double crossed...the blood suckers knew he was coming...but who is the traitor amongst the day walkers and why? Worthy of a space on my 'favorite horror' flicks shelf.
