    Product Description
CARLA TATE IS A MENTALLY CHALLENGED YOUNG WOMAN WHO HAS JUST GRADUATED FROM HER SPECIAL BOARDING SCHOOL AND IS READY TO FACE LIFE IN THE REAL WORLD. WHILE TRYING TO SLIP OUT OF HER WEALTHY FAMILY'S PROTECTIVE GRIP AND EXERT HER INDEPENDENCE, SHE MEETS AND FALLS IN LOVE WITH A MENTALLY CHALLENGED YOUNG MAN.

    Amazon.com
Filming a love story centered on two mentally challenged people is a touching idea, one that's been attempted in films such as Benny and Joon and even, to a certain extent, As Good As It Gets. The Other Sister is another addition to the genre, a well- acted comedy-drama centering on the romance of Carla (Juliette Lewis) and Daniel (Giovani Ribisi) and throwing in some general family angst as a secondary story line. The acting is tremendous--Lewis and Ribisi both give convincing performances without condescending to their characters. Diane Keaton plays yet another charming scatterbrain, this time as Elizabeth Tate, the uptight, rich mother who wants a picture-perfect life. But good acting isn't enough here. These fine actors drown in a sea of mediocre writing, and we're left with a film with no real conflict or tension. Will Carla and Daniel make it work? Well, of course. Will mother Elizabeth loosen up about her "gay workaholic" daughter and let Carla live her own life? Do you really need to ask? There are a few cringe-worthy moments that have a sense of truthfulness, such as when Daniel stands up at Carla's sister's wedding to announce his feelings. But otherwise, these characters live in a pampered, fairy-tale world where the worst thing that happens to them is that the meanies at school put chewing gum in Daniel's bike helmet. Ultimately, this is a sweet, albeit occasionally saccharine, tale that will move those who are looking for cheerful fare. --Jenny Brown

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding, Funny, and Insightful   December 9, 2009

This is a movie that has everything: joy, laughter, real life, sadness, complexities, sex, fun... For me, it was a movie about acceptance. A wonderful mother-daughter movie. This is one of my favorites and I haven't met anyone who doesn't love it as well.

4 out of 5 stars Movie Review: The Other Sister   October 2, 2009

The main characters in the family included Carla (Juliette Lewis) as the developmentally disabled daughter, the nervous mother (Diane Keaton), the doctor father (Tom Skerritt), and two other daughters; the middle daughter and the oldest daughter. Carla finds a boyfriend, Daniel or Danny (Giovanni Ribisi), who also has a developmental disability. The movie tells a story of family dynamics. The father tries to keep a balance in the family and show each of his daughters that he loves them despite their choices or abilities. The mother attempts to maintain control over things to which she cannot control. She has a desire to maintain a perfect picture to the rest of the upper class society, but alienates her daughters in the meantime. The oldest daughter is gay and feels like an outcast when she comes home to visit. She is not able to bring her partner home for the holidays or for special occasions, and the family is not supposed to mention the fact that she is gay to the other members of society. The middle daughter obtained a college degree, but the mother is not satisfied with her choice to "just" be a second grade teacher. Her mother would feel more proud to be able to brag that her daughter was a professor at a university. Carla seems to cause problems in the home. At a young age her mother sent her off to school for ten years. When Carla returns, at age seventeen, she tries to let her mother know that she can make decisions and would like to live life out from under her mother's overbearing control. This movie was humorous and enjoyable.

when i ordered the other sister, it said the movie was in perfect condition. I received it with a huge scratch running nearly all the way aound the disc. it will play only parts of the movie without skipping madly. I am rather disappointed.

I first saw this movie on Starz and it was the most wonderful movie I have ever seen. The Actors and story line were fantastic. After my daughter saw it she kept asking for the movie.

My daughters and all their friends absolutely loved this movie back in junior high school. All their friends and they could recite each and every line. They are seniors in college now but lost their VHS copy and couldn't find it anywhere. I ordered a DVD for each of my twins for Christmas. We all gathered 'round and watched it together. Great family movie. No doubt they'll be introducing it to all their college friends now.
