Widely considered the best movie in the "classic Trek" series of feature films, Star Trek IV returns to one of the favorite themes of the original TV series--time travel--to bring Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Scotty, Sulu, Uhura, and Chekov from the 23rd century to present-day San Francisco. In their own time, the Starfleet heroes encounter an alien probe emitting a mysterious message--a message delivered in the song of the now-extinct Earth species of humpback whales. Failure to respond to the probe will result in Earth's destruction, so Kirk and company time-travel to 20th-century Earth--in their captured Klingon starship--to transport a humpback whale to the future in an effort to peacefully communicate with the alien probe. The plot sounds somewhat absurd in description, but as executed by returning director Leonard Nimoy, this turned out to be a crowd-pleasing adventure, filled with humor and lively interaction among the favorite Star Trek characters. Catherine Hicks (from TV's 7th Heaven) plays the 20th-century whale expert who is finally convinced of Kirk's and Spock's benevolent intentions. Purchased this Star Trek for a new generation my grandson the humorous script is ageless...an all time family favorite for several generations.

Great movie! I loved that the cast of Star Trek TOS had to go to 80's America. Also the jokes and gags are hilarious, like when Chekov was talking to the officer(mind you it's the mid 80's and he's russian) asking "May you please tell me where the Nuclear WESSELLS are in Alameda", or when Kirk tells Gillian that Spock had a little to much LDS.
Though most "Trekkies" probably don't like it because there's not enough fighting or space action, this is my ABSOLUTE favorite Star Trek film,and one of my 5 favorite films of all time.
Now about the VHS tape I have, the '91 directors edition, it's fair though the random commercial about renting videos was a bit random(the dog rents a movie and it's normal O_o). The introduction interview with Mr. Nimoy was okay, but a bit bland at most. The Widescreen is GREAT much better than full screen, which was more popular in it's time.
In the all in all I'd recommend the Movie to most people who like Star Trek and Comedies. Though the Director's edition Widescreen VHS is more a collector's item, the special edition DVD would be more "Logical" to purchase.

Star Trek IV is a great movie (some say the best of the series) and it looks great on DVD. The problem is that this is a 2-disc set and there are so few extras. No deleted scenes? They filmed an entire scene with Sulu meeting his great-grandfather as a boy, but you won't find it here. And why couldn't this have been the director's edition? I think they did a widescreen director's edition on VHS several years ago, so it's not like they would have had to make a whole new cut. I'm glad to have the extras that were included though. At least there were more than with the Star Trek III 2-disc set. But I'm not sure it justified having two discs.

Str Trk 4 : Whales
The crew of the innrprize are on sporks planet and they hear that there is this big piece of poo in space that is headed to earth and is going to blow it up a lot. this is like vag'na from the first movie but instead of a mind melt they need whales. Spork is still out of it and is wearing a bathrobe and they all decide that they are going to hang a u-turn around the sun to go back in time to 1980s where there are lots of whales cause there aren't any humpbacks in the future. THIS WORKS! They end up in San Fran and land their invisible plane in the park and someone sees them and is all like "WHAAAAA" but he's a bum so noone will believe him. they hang out in San Fran for awhile and spork makes a headband so he's all like Rambo now and kills a punk rocker on the bus cause his music is TOO LOUD! Kork flirts with this 80s chick and Scotchy speaks into a mouse and then everyone is freaked out that Checkoff is a russian. Spork swims with the whales and then they go back to the future and the big thing is like "FINE!" and then it leaves.
