Amazon.com Most critics couldn't get behind Bill Murray's modern retelling of Charles Dickens's A Christmas Carol, finding it too unfocused at times and not nearly wicked enough. Still, if you're a Murray fan, you have to enjoy his deliciously nasty portrayal of the world's meanest TV executive, who has his cathartic moment one cold Christmas night in New York City. The various ghosts lead him on a ghost-town tour of Manhattan, with stops at holidays past, present, and future and a Kumbaya moment when Al Green and Annie Lennox sing "Put a Little Love in Your Heart." The effects are otherworldly, but one wishes the writing were as sharp as Murray's edgy portrayal. --Marshall Fine

I Didn't Like It In 88, and I Still Don't Like It In 09 July 4, 2009 YJM (Somewhere In The South) Being a Gen X'er I saw this movie in the theaters when it came out and I just recently saw it again a few days ago, thus the reason for this review. I was originally skeptical about seeing a remake on an absolute masterpiece of a movie in the original. I thought to myself "I'm sure there will be lots of gee-whiz special effects, but how is it going to capture the spirit of the original?" Well they didn't capture the spirit of the original, despite the "gee-whiz" special effects. What I also found out years later is Bill Murray was going through a horrible cocaine addiction at the time this movie was made (using on the set apparently) and you can tell. First of all he looks terrible in this movie, almost sickly. His performance is flat as a board, he just appears to be going through the motions and I believe this is a direct result of his drug problems. The movie is filled with a star-studded cast yet none of them shine in this movie, none of them can shine with a terrible script and the film's poor directing. The ending monologue by Bill is nauseating and comes off as being sanctimonious and superficial. There is something so pure and wonderful about the early days of cinema, before they were able to rely on special effects to mask a poor script, poor directing, and poor acting. The original Scrooge is a shining example of that pureness. It is one of my all-time favorite films and this ridiculous remake does nothing to tarnish its greatness. If for some reason you're a Gen X'er who missed this when it originally came out and are thinking of giving it a spin in your DVD player, don't. Buy the original instead and enjoy a much, much better film in every aspect, except for the special effects...
A great Scrooge film June 20, 2009 Richard Franks (Arcadia, Calif) A wonderful holiday movie that does a great job with a modern twist on the old Christmas Carol theme. Bill Murray is visited by the traditional ghosts but each ghost is nicely modernized. The film is an amazingly good film for the whole family.
missed the mark May 8, 2009 M. JPharms (Malden, MA United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This unfunny, christmas carol satire totally missed the mark in my book. It wasted talented actors with a really god-awful script. I didn't laugh once.

MY HUSBAND AND I LOVED THIS MOVIE! WITH ALL THE REMAKES OF SCROOGE, BILL MURRAY AND CAROL KANE MAKE THIS THE FUNNIEST! GREAT FOR THE KIDS, TOO! NO FOUL LANGUAGE IN IT!
Great movie but... January 29, 2009 J. HOWARD (Middle GA) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is a great movie, but the quality and special features of this DVD are lacking. I remember watching this movie when it camed out and liking it. I wanted to learn more as you often do when something comes out on DVD, deleted scenes, gag reels, actor/director comments... not much here though.
