Amazon.com essential video A truly perfect movie, the 1942 Casablanca still wows viewers today, and for good reason. Its unique story of a love triangle set against terribly high stakes in the war against a monster is sophisticated instead of outlandish, intriguing instead of garish. Humphrey Bogart plays the allegedly apolitical club owner in unoccupied French territory that is nevertheless crawling with Nazis; Ingrid Bergman is the lover who mysteriously deserted him in Paris; and Paul Heinreid is her heroic, slightly bewildered husband. Claude Rains, Sydney Greenstreet, Peter Lorre, and Conrad Veidt are among what may be the best supporting cast in the history of Hollywood films. This is certainly among the most spirited and ennobling movies ever made. --Tom Keogh

"You Must Remember This?" Really? July 4, 2009 neotroglodyte (desert southwest) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Chemistry? Bogart and Bergman? Some chemical combinations generate heat and light...this experiment is about as interesting as watching gel-electrophoresis in a dark laboratory. The dialogue..."Of all the night clubs...Play it again, Sam, Here's lookin' at you, kid..." This was the best three experienced screen writers could do? Why the persisting praise? Compare this film to one done 5-6 years earlier; "The Life of Emile Zola". Casablanca didn't underestimate the taste of the movie-going public in the 40's, nor does it now, apparently. As for the principals...Bogart has the same demeanor/grimace/dynamic range he had in The African Queen (and most of his other films), except here he's dressed like a penguin without the charisma of any known Spheniscidae. Bergman was always Bergman. Beautiful, but what did she see in him? Claude Rains and Peter Lorre were always good as Rains and Lorre. So? Another assault on the terms 'classic' and 'masterpiece'. Watch it objectively...
Great movie, no subtitles June 28, 2009 Miguel Murillo Cordero (Alajuela, Costa Rica) I bought this so I can watch this classic along with my family (they don't speak English), but when I got I found it did not have subtitles, still I kept it for myself!
Simply the best movie I've ever seen June 21, 2009 mashny (New York) There's nothing I can add to the reviews here other than to say I've seen "Casablanca" at least forty times. If all goes according to plan, I'll see it at least another forty times before I fade to black.
thanks!!!! June 13, 2009 Robert P. Kitchens (Clayton, Ga United States) Your service was prompt and the product was as ordered. Thanks robertkitch13
Casablanca Best Movie Ever June 10, 2009 S. Portelance (Haverhill, MA) I've watched and re-watched this movie at least 25 times. Bogart and Bergman were the a perfect couple that were not meant to be, making this deeply political film portrayed in a love story set in Casablanca truly amazing, beautiful, wonderful. Has to be watched in the black and white version to get the full effect. AAA+ 5 stars, highly recommended.
