    Editorial Reviews:

When two Italian-American boys from New York are falsely accused of murder in a small Alabama town, they call for a lawyer--but the only lawyer they know is their cousin Vinny (Joe Pesci), who made six attempts before he passed his bar exam. My Cousin Vinny is a classic fish-out-of-water comedy; the flimsy plot about clearing the two boys and solving the murder is just a hook to support a lot of culture-clash humor. Thanks to the strong cast of character actors like Fred Gwynne, Austin Pendleton, and Lane Smith, it's pretty funny--even old-hat jokes about Brooklyn versus Southern accents come to life. Pesci has played a few too many schticky characters, but this time it works. There's just enough humanity in his caricature to make Vinny likable and entertaining. When the movie was released, there was controversy about whether Marisa Tomei, playing Vinny's big-haired and black-leather-wearing fiancee, deserved to win the best supporting actress Oscar (she beat out Judy Davis, Joan Plowright, Miranda Richardson, and Vanessa Redgrave); but seeing her performance on its own, it's a comic marvel and worthy of honor. --Bret Fetzer

This is a great movie! Funny, entertaining, with a small lesson in the art of merging divergent cultures. Had seen it before, but wanted my own copy. Thanks!

This movie is as hilarious the 15th time I watched it as the very first time I watched it. A great movie to pull you right out of the dumps!

    The Bottom Line:

The laughs drop off a bit after the first hour, but the courtroom scenes are inventive and funny and the movie rarely failed to put a smile on my face; it may be a bit too long, but it's still a movie I have little difficulty recommending.

4 out of 5 stars Great show, but probably not for "youts" (er...youths)   April 2, 2009
Alan Holyoak (In the shadow of the Tetons)
Pesci and Tomei turn in top-notch performances in this fish-out-of-water tale of two dazzling Brooklynites that travel to the deep south in an effort to save two young men from being convicted for a murder they did not commit.

Pesci's character's unorthodox courtroom style and the edgy performance turned in by his auto-wise fiance (Tomei) sets a small town on its ear. I also greatly enjoyed seeing Fred Gwynne (perhaps best known for his work as Herman Munster) as the judge.

The humor is rich, the story is engaging, and, if you haven't seen this movie before, the plot contains enough twists to keep you on the edge of your seat wondering what will happen next.

This is a great show that you will be glad you watched. (Be advised, though, that this review is based on a content edited version of this movie.)

This is one of my all time favorite movies. I have lived in the South my entire life and I have lots of friends who call people "Yankees" behind their back. If you need cheering up and want to really have some laughs, this is the movie for you. Joe Pesci is fantastic in his portrayal of Vinnie, a guy who finally passes the bar after numerous attempts. When he comes down to Alabama to try and defend his cousin in court, the results are hilarious. If you are tired of all the gloom and doom on the news, you owe it to yourself to get this movie and cheer up. Power Path to Love
