Amazon.com The producers of the Superman movies took a shot at revitalizing the myth of Santa Claus with this 1985 feature. Unfortunately, the results were much less compelling than the flagship Superman feature, despite a script by one of the latter's key writers (David Newman) and a story structure that is essentially a carbon copy of the Man of Steel's movie. The first half of Santa Claus: The Movie is a ponderous origins tale, in which we learn that Santa was actually a woodcutter saved from certain death by elves and taken to the North Pole to begin life as the chimney-dropping hero of children everywhere. The second half involves a world-class villain (John Lithgow) who recruits an outcast elf (Dudley Moore) in a scheme to sabotage old St. Nick. While it aims to become a Christmas classic in the hearts and minds of generations to come, the film never really engages an audience, partially because Santa himself is merely a supporting player in the drama. Jeannot Szwarc (Supergirl, Jaws II) directs with a disabling lack of vision, and the special effects are terrible for such an expensive production. Sorry, but it's coals in the stocking for this flick. --Tom Keogh

an underrated Christmas classic February 8, 2009 Amy E. Barker (Virginia) I first saw "Santa Claus The Movie" on TV when I was a child. I saw it again recently on TV during the Christmas holidays 2008. The first part of the movie is about the story of how Santa Claus came to be. The second part of the movie is set in the 20th century, in 1980s New York. A misunderstood elf named Patch becomes partners with an evil toymaker named BZ. Personally, I think this part is a bit weaker than the first half of the movie but it's still enjoyable.
Replaced a favorite January 31, 2009 Martha Hart (Tucson, AZ) I appreciated the swift service and the excellent quality of the DVD. This is my favorite Christmas movie and seem to have lost my original. Thanks again.

All I Remembered and more !!!! January 14, 2009 Faybee (Australia) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Having searched for this movie for a number of years in Both New Zealand & Australia I was so pleased when I got told to try Amazon.com. I shared it with my kids and they (even at 12 & 14yrs) really loved it as truly shows the magic behind Christmas and Dudley Moore really makes a wonderful elf. I love especially the details of the North Pole and how everything is elf-made! The movie tells of how Santa comes to be, how the whole delivery in one night happens and much much more in a truly believable way, then as time passes and today's children aren't satisfied with wooden toys they try something new and a certain young elf learns about being away from the north pole then well the story takes off from there. This is a wonderfule Movie for the whole family to sit and watch togeather!!!
It's not XMAS until you have watched this TALE! January 5, 2009 Sirius Black (Haverford, PA) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
My title may seem like over the top drama - and you may just get a little of that in this movie, but I swear, If you haven't seen this film or you've heard its childish or silly, I implore you. Give it a chance. Form your OWN opinion. Whether your 7 or 37, it will move you, make you smile, and wish Christmas could last for weeks rather than a day. From the team that brought you Superman this film had a lot of love put into it. 50 million bucks to be exact! They could have copped out and used 1980s trick photography or what was availble for CGI (not much) but the spent the good money and time to train REAL deer from (Norway?) I think? PLEASE - give this a chance. I know you will love it as much as I do. Its a christmas story that's warm and charming. Best way to sum it up. Warm and charming. You wont find a man here or on any other planet who portrays the childhood myth and stories about Santa Claus like David Huddleston. His smile and charisma, look and style are perfect. This guy is a Santa a child would trust and run to sit on unlike those "mall santas" - we all know them. Dudley Moore and John Lithgow's performances enhance the film. Just a heart warming tale about Christmas. No sex, no BS - just a good family Christmas film. Now if you'll excuse me I have to go order the widescreen version...WATCH IT - I promise you and the fam will love it year after year. I sure do
