Amazon.com Don Knotts and Tim Conway star in The Private Eyes, a 1980 comedy about two bumbling detectives solving a murder. It's an impressively incompetent affair. Every ancient joke falls with a muffled thud as Knotts and Conway ham their way through the pointless story: The lord and lady of a capacious manor are killed, and the lord's ghost seems to have returned to knock off the staff one by one. There's an austere housekeeper, a snooty butler with compulsive twitches, a sexy upstairs maid, a deformed groomsman, and a buxom young heir to the estate, who of course is going to be in some state of undress before the movie is over. People get killed, their bodies disappear, Knotts and Conway wander aimlessly through secret passageways, dimly seeking some way out of this movie. Conway cowrote the script, so he gets most of the blame; Knotts was probably just happy to have the work. --Bret Fetzer

great for anyone who likes slap stick comedy May 22, 2009 M. L. Elliott I first saw this movie with my parents when I was 11 and have loved it ever since. We even have our own "inside jokes" when we think of something funny we will say a funny line or two out of the movie. Like Wookelar. Nobody knows what we are talking about until they see the movie and then they start commenting on the privet eyes movie to some one else. Its good clean lol funny. I highly recommend buying this movie for when you really need a good laugh with friends.
Classic Knotts & Conway April 22, 2009 Brian S. Pratt (Lynnwood, WA USA) If you like Don Knotts and Tin Conway, you will love Private Eyes. Filled with humorous innuendoes and play on words, this film brings laughter with just a touch of suspense. Two less than competent inspectors wind up at a mansion where people are being killed, and they go about solving the mystery in comedic fashion. Excellent story and spot on comedic acting. Very well done and a definite recommend.
5 for the movie, 1 for the company that put it on DVD April 10, 2009 bobtec (Redlands, CA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I don't know if Hensteeth (or Henstooth, or whever they are. I've never heard of them) think they're being trendy charging over $20 for a B Movie (a good B Movie, but still a B Movie), but this is way too much considering that it was not restored, has no choices of standard vs. widescreen, and has no extras (it's basically a Goodtime Video at Criterion Prices, and Amazon's prices are among the best prices). I'll hold out until Goodtime, Platinum, or Mill Creek gets the rights. Or some major studio gets the rights, and releases it for at least $10 less (and with special features).
An Underrated Comedy Classic April 4, 2009 Silky Greensleeves (Northeast,Ohio USA) Its great that this truly underrated film, finally gets A dvd release.I remember taping this movie off Hbo,back in the mid 80s.I played the tape, until it finally broke.I've been looking for this movie for years;glad it's on DVD.Knotts and Conway were A great comedy team, kind of A poor man's Laurel and Hardy. This film is full of many great gags;"The Wookalar","The Time Gun(that goes off every hour)","The Butler that Flips Out(whenever he hears the word murder),"The Clues that could rhyme, but never do",amoung others. If you like Tim Conway, and or Don Knotts, then this movie is highly recommended.Conway and Knotts are in great comic form,as 2 of the dumbest Private Eyes you've even seen.4 stars; An underrated classic.
Saw it first time around March 14, 2009 Sean See I saw this in the theatre when it first came out and it was memorably silly enough that I wanted it on DVD.
