Amazon.com Bob Rueland (David Duchovny) and Grace Briggs (Minnie Driver) have very little in common. Granted, they both live in Chicago and they're both a bit lovelorn, but that's about it. Still, fate has something in mind for these two somewhat-depressed souls (a construction worker and budding artist, respectively), who've both recently had brushes with death--he's a recent widower, she's just recovered from a heart transplant--and are a little more serious than their friends and relatives. After a series of misbegotten blind dates and almost-meetings, though, these two finally get together, and find that they fit seamlessly with each other. Despite their differences, they have a lot in common--in fact, quite a lot. It seems that the heart that now beats inside Grace's chest once belonged to Bob's wife (Joely Richardson), who died in a car crash. Coincidence? We think not. A gentle, pleasing romantic comedy, Return to Me marks the directorial debut of Bonnie Hunt, an acclaimed actress known most famously for her role as Renee Zellweger's sister in Jerry Maguire. A shining, happy bright spot in whatever role she's in, Hunt has also invested the film with her trademark brand of humor: dry but sincere, sarcastic but not caustic, and with a deep current of humanity and romance. In the midst of all the permutations that fate surrounds them with, Driver and Duchovny make a pleasantly low-key couple; the triumph of the film is that despite all the contrived angst, the romance is never overly saccharine. They provide a quiet center in a film that has a fair amount of chaos in it, particularly due to Driver's extended family of Irish and Italian relatives (which occasionally tips the film into cutesy territory) and most hilariously to Driver's best friend, played by director Hunt . As a harried mother with innumerable kids and a likable oaf of a husband (James Belushi), Hunt again steals scenes effortlessly; Belushi is a comic revelation, better than he's been in years. You'll have the pleasant memories of both of these couples--one falling in love, one together for years--with you a long while after seeing this film. --Mark Englehart

Poor quality June 21, 2009 L. Whiteley (Virginia) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Love the movie, but the DVD was scratched pretty bad so the beginning and ending are unwatchable. I bought it used and the scratches weren't mentioned.
Awesome! April 25, 2009 Elizabeth J. Brookman (Tampa, FL United States) Love the story. Very clever. Takes you back to the past...very good acting and fun with the older men in the movie. One of the best romantic comedies around!
Heartwarming April 25, 2009 Music Mom (St. Louis MO) This movie is romantic and funny and touching all at the same time! It's one to watch again and again.

RETURN TO ME is soft, sweet romantic comedy staring David Duchovny and Minnie Driver. This film, although very predictable, is charming and quite well done. My sweetie and I spent a very pleasant Sunday afternoon relaxing together and enjoying this film. In RETURN TO ME, Bob Rueland (David Duchovny) and his wife, Elizabeth (Joely Richardson), are very much in love. They seem to have the perfect life. Then tragedy strikes and Elizabeth is killed in a horrible car accident. Bob is devastated; he is barely functioning. After about a year, he meets Grace (Minnie Driver), and he feels an immediate connection to her. Grace has her own secrets, however. She has recently had a heart transplant, and for the first time in her life is not "the sick one." She doesn't want to tell Bob about her transplant. As things progress, Grace realizes that she must tell Bob about her medical past. Unfortunately, it is almost too late, and Grace and Bob may both end up with broken hearts. RETURN TO ME is wonderfully sentimental, very engaging, and very sweet, without being too syrupy. I cried in the beginning, I cried at the end, and I smiled the entire way through. It is just a plain nice movie. Minnie Driver gives her typical excellent performance, and David Duchovny (who, as much as I love him, just can't act) does a fine job. Bonnie Hunt, as both a first time director and as Grace's best friend, uses her signature humor and dry wit to great advantage, and Jim Belushi is great as her lovable oaf of a husband. As wonderful as the entire cast is, however, Carroll O'Connor, as Grace's grandfather, and Robert Loggia, as his partner in an Irish-Italian restaurant, steal the show, bringing tears and laughter to your heart each time they are on the screen. Wonderful old standards permeate this soundtrack, and you will find yourself quietly humming along. RETURN TO ME is pure delight from beginning to end. Enjoy it with someone you love. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

While the VHS tape I purchased was in good shape, I meant to order it in DVD so I was a little embarrassed that I accidentally purchased the VHS tape. Fortunately I have a DVD/VCR combo and could still watch it. The movie had a couple of flaws but for the most part it was in good condition.
