| Editorial Reviews:
Amazon.com Dustin Hoffman plays a lowlife who happens upon a plane crash and rescues the passengers, but doesn't really care about the value of his deed or the attendant publicity when the media starts searching for the hero. Another fellow (Andy Garcia) steps into the gap and claims credit, and as his life changes for the better he takes on a messianic glow. Geena Davis is the cynical television reporter who pushes the latter's fame in order to keep her story alive, and this film, directed by Stephen Frears (Prick Up Your Ears), takes a few familiar jabs at a manipulative and voyeuristic press. This is essentially an unofficial remake of Meet John Doe, though it is less dramatic and forceful in the end than Frank Capra's classic. Chevy Chase has an oddly anachronistic part as Davis's editor (maybe he thought he really was in Meet John Doe), but the film belongs to Hoffman, who makes his character a slightly cleaned-up version of the actor's own Ratso Rizzo in Midnight Cowboy. --Tom Keogh

Love a Hero December 28, 2009 Intertech Plastics Inc. (Colorado) I was excited to find a copy of an older movie, Hero, which I love. Hero is zany and rather slapstick like the original Hollywood version which portrays that time period. Dustin Hoffman's performance is excellent and wonderfully cranky. Geena and Andy are superb as always. I have watched this film many times and still laugh at the wonderful comedy.
Watching this film reminds me of many afternoons in the Saturday matinee with my little brother in the small town where we grew up.
Who's the true hero here? October 6, 2009 Eric S. Kim (Southern California) This is sadly a very underrated comedy. It's a unique "Cinderella" tale that satirizes the media and the true characteristics of a true hero. It's a darn good film with heartwarming moments and some good hilarity mixed as one. The real standouts here are the performances from our principal actors: Dustin Hoffman, Geena Davis, and Andy Garcia. All three give wonderful performances as distinctive people who are connected to the troubles of the media and society's view of what makes a hero a real hero. Make no mistake, this is a really good movie that should shouldn't be very underrated.
pretty good July 18, 2009 Rachel (Oregon, USA) liked it was kinda funny. was a good gift for a friend he liked it a lot.
Hero: not Blu-Ray! June 5, 2009 John L. Hank (Columbus, OH USA) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I thought I was getting BluRay version, but it wasn't even widescreen. I will have to pay more attention in the future.
HERO is a wonderful Film! November 20, 2008 Cindy Van (San Diego, CA) Hero with Dustin Hoffman,is an excellent and highly entertaining film.
It is sad that I had to search high and low to find this film, as it is no longer at Blockbuster type stores to rent or available to purchase in Chain retailers, so I am thankful that Amazon had it available for me to purchase.
This movie's main characters are all very unlikely heros but turn out to be way more then we the viewer could ever imagine them to be. A plane crash sets a chain of events into motion that create the opportunity to teach many lessons in this film, some obvious and some very subtle, but all meaningful.
The outcome of the movie is not what I expected, it was bigger and better then I could have hoped for!
I feel like anyone who watches this Film, no matter what age, race , or gender will find something valuable (about themselves) buried in this Movie. Hopefully, this Film will help some of us to realize that there is a HERO in every one of us, just waiting to come out!
