Patch Adams raises two schools of thought: There are those who are inspired by the true story of a troubled man who finds happiness in helping others--a man set on changing the world and who may well accomplish the task. And then there are those who feel manipulated by this feel-good story, who want to smack the young medical student every time he begins his silly antics.

Staving off suicidal thoughts, Hunter Adams commits himself into a psychiatric ward, where he not only garners the nickname "Patch," but learns the joy in helping others. To this end, he decides to go to medical school, where he clashes with the staid conventions of the establishment as he attempts to inject humor and humanity into his treatment of the patients ("We need to start treating the patient as well as the disease," he declares throughout the film). Robin Williams, in the title role, is as charming as ever, although someone should tell him to broaden his range--the ever-cheerful do-gooder à la Good Will Hunting and Dead Poets Society is getting a little old. His sidekick Truman (Daniel London) steals the show with his gawky allure and eyebrows that threaten to overtake his lean face--he seems more real, which is odd considering that Patch Adams does exist and this film is based on his life. Monica Potter is the coolly reluctant love interest, and she makes the most of her one-dimensional part. While moments of true heartfelt emotion do come through, the major flaw of this film is that the good guys are just so gosh-darn good and the bad ones are just big meanies with no character development. Patch Adams, though, does provide the tears, the giggles, and the kooky folks who will keep you smiling at the end. --Jenny Brown

    5 out of 5 stars a must-have robin williams movie   January 7, 2010
    Zap (IL)
This is a GREAT movie!! It has a little bit of everything. Humor, drama, and romance. This movie also shows what a talented actor Robin Williams is. He shows his comic side in the movie, but you also get to see how well of a dramatic actor he can be. The dvd also includes bonus footage with outtakes which are so fun to watch!!! For fans of Robin Williams, this is a definate addition to your collection if you don't have it already.

    4 out of 5 stars Inspiring but over-the-top   December 15, 2009
Laura M. Hoopes (Claremont, CA USA)
Patch Adams is a movie from the period of Robin Williams' life when all of his roles were inspiring. One reviewer I've read said that he wanted to throw up when he thought about the Patch Adams period. Others find these films to be an expression of a sincere desire of a man to be a better person. I am in that group. There are few moments in this film where you receive a negative image of Hunter Adams (a real person being portrayed by Williams), I have to admit that. I liked the symbolism of the butterfly that was used at the moment when he chose going on with life in spite of problems. Some might find it excessive, though. I thought it was a good understated connection with the earlier moment of confession about how his inamorata, a doctor who had always been chased for her beauty, had wanted to escape by becoming a caterpillar. Overall, I kleenex-demanding movie with a positive message; not for those who want to balance good and bad sides of a character and make up their own minds.

5 out of 5 stars Best of Robin Williams   December 7, 2009
    J. Eckert (Texas)
Robin Williams is the Evelyn Woods of free flowing comedy, yet he does his best work in more serious, dramatic roles. In Patch Adams, he gets to stretch both muscles. He proves that he is gifted in both genres and excels by using both in this film. Patch Adams is a touching movie with just the right amount of laughter and tears; tears from crying and tears from laughter. One of my all time favorite movies.

5 out of 5 stars No Patch about it   September 11, 2009
    CMG (SF Bay Area)
Any rating under 5 stars is a tragedy. This movie is absolutely wonderful in many many ways. There is no question about the talent Robin Williams brings but both Monica Potter and Phillip Seymour Hoffman are spectacular in their roles.
Simply put, Fantastic. The balance of tragedy and comedy is unsurpassed!

5 out of 5 stars What a movie should be   September 7, 2009
    Holly Kincaid (Fishers, IN USA)
This is one of those movies that I kept wanting to watch, but never got around to it. With the long holiday weekend, my family decided that watching this would be a good way to spend part of the time.

I loved it! Patch Adams is a fascinating character and the story is wonderful. Robin Williams is at his best -- not too over-the-top but absolutely hysterical at times. I was laughing out loud in parts and very deeply touched in others. What more can one say about a movie?

I also have to say that Monica Potter is great in this. The camera loves her and she can really, really act.

A great movie that runs the full range of emotion -- terrific!
