If, as they say, you're in a certain mood, Message in a Bottle can be just the ticket. Based on Nicholas Sparks's bestselling novel, this handsome but overly calculated romance tale stars Robin Wright Penn as Theresa, a Chicago Tribune researcher who finds a note encased in a green bottle that has floated onto a Cape Cod shore. The message within is a heartfelt, yearning declaration of love to a woman named Catherine, but the author is unknown until Theresa (rather improbably) tracks him down in North Carolina. He's Garret Blake (Kevin Costner), a taciturn builder of sailboats and a grieving widower whose late wife, poetically speaking, was the intended recipient of the seafaring note Theresa found. Theresa, a divorcée with a son, decides to meet Garret, only to find him as bottled-up as his message. Nevertheless, a romance blooms on the strength of quality time in a sailboat and lots of cuddling, though the script tosses in bits of conflict to keep their relationship spicy. Directed by Luis Mandoki (When a Man Loves a Woman), this love story is entirely by the numbers, with Costner inhabiting (rather than performing) a stock fantasy of a man perfect in every way save his broken heart. Penn brings more vibrancy to her equally predictable part, but fortunately for all, Paul Newman, John Savage, Robbie Coltrane, and Illeana Douglas are on hand in nicely textured character parts. Sometimes predictability is exactly what one wants when settling in for an evening of home video, and this movie fits the bill nicely. The appealing cinematography is by ace cameraman Caleb Deschanel. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars Message in a Bottle (Snap Case)   February 4, 2010
    Arnita D. Brown (USA)
A divorced single mother finds a bottle on the shore whilst out jogging. Much taken with the sentiments of the message inside she uses the resources of the Chicago paper she works for to track down the sender. When she meets him an affection quickly forms between them, and his cantankerous father is also taken with her. But it is obvious something in the past is casting a terrible shadow. The pace is set from the opening scene and the ocean with its consistent but gentle force splashing against the shore. `Message in a Bottle' follows this leisurely pace; it is not in a real hurry to give up all its secrets, but like the ocean, will surrender all in good time. So relax, sit back and allow yourself to enjoy this movie.

This is a classic that should still be seen by everyone! Some very meaningful life lessons we may know or should be reminded of once again.

The way the movie started has already captured my interest. Theresa, from the start, reflected such yearnings for love, while her beauty just kept me vividly fixed on the screen. Moreover, she reflected inexplicable pain, or some longing for something she has lost. I wanted to know what it was. Was it her divorce? Was it her loneliness? Or the fact she had to share her son with her ex husband? In this respect she shared the same mysterious pain which tormented the hero, Garret. I grew curious as I watched the movie, because the cloud of mystery was well hidden behind the hero's deep emotional sufferings. I could feel their pain throughout the entire movie, and the fact they fell in love, only increased my curiosity. Like many other viewers, I believe, I really wanted everyone in this movie to be happy, because they all seemed hurt from life. Even Garret's father, which is far from being a flat character, reflected misery and dissatisfaction; he tried to make it better for his son. But there was a deep message in this movie, and that is not to hesitate about love, but to grab it when you get the chance. Garret was torn between the elongated grieving of his dead wife; he never stopped mourning her death, and between Theresa, the new love. It appeared that he loved Theresa just the same, but he somehow let her slip through his fingers. `Was the bereavement of his wife more important than his new love, Theresa?' or rather, I asked myself this, `Was the pain of the death of his wife stronger than his new love for Theresa?' As viewers, I believe, we really wanted him to do the right thing and live in happiness. We did not want him to grieve anymore, and now after he found the love that could redeem him, all he has to do is to bring Theresa back to his place. But when he had finally realized that life is more important than death, and he is finally sailing away to get Theresa, that Garret do the unexpected, the unthinkable; Alas with the unselfish act of heroism! Yes, he knew what he was doing, but why? Why? Why? It was an incredible movie. It was a quality movie with a lot of pain and emotions. I recommend it to the romantic minded but not to the broken hearted.

This is a very emotional and good love story. Paul Newman and Kevin Costner do a superb job. Will watch again in the future.
