Product Description ABOUT THE PERILS OF LOVE DURING HOLLYWOOD'S BLACKLISTING ERA. Amazon.com essential video Robert Redford and Barbra Streisand star as sociopolitical opposites--he's a WASP novelist, she's an activist--who nevertheless strike up a romance in the 1930s, and have a rocky relationship through the next two decades that reflects much of America's history. An essential part of the movie--the Hollywood blacklist and the McCarthy witch- hunt years--comes across as a botch, due to some excessive cutting before the film was released. But except for that hole in the heart of the story, director Sydney Pollack (Out of Africa) has crafted a strong and moving drama about two interesting characters. Redford (always good with Pollack) is at the height of his powers, and Streisand is persuasive. --Tom Keogh

DVD purchase March 18, 2009 Richard E. Stubblebine (Kansas City) product received was as advertised, and in great condition. Would buy from this vendor again.
an annoying big budget tale February 13, 2009 tadzio (beantown) 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
The film is annoying for its pretentiousness and loose ends. The most realistic sequence is when the mousy Katie takes advantage of Hubbell's drunken condition in a NYC nightclub to take him home to sate her lust. Throughout the picture the hapless Hubble seems unable to push her off. The romance consist mostly of her efforts to intrude herself into his life which she at once resents and covets. It never makes any sense why Hubble and his friends are able to party and have affairs in NYC at different during the war while in the Navy. The war was a very cushy experience for all. It was not your dad's war, the one in which people slogged through Europe and the Pacific and got killed or maimed. Also, weird is the way the accidentally meet years later seemingly unconnected. What about the kid? Hubble didn't care? This very aggressive Jewish girl from NYC wasn't down his throat for increased support payments every time he made another buck?.Add the loose ends to red propaganda that saturates several scenes and you might need an antacid.
2.5 stars out of 4 February 8, 2009 One-Line Film Reviews (Ann Arbor) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
The Bottom Line: Though The Way We Were should be praised for not following a formulaic plotline, the complete dearth of chemistry between the leads and clumsy insertion of a McCarthyism subplot make this film a mixed bag; if you like romances you might like this one, but there are far better options out there.

Redford is never more beautiful and charming and Babs is never more liberal and passionate. They are the people who get Presidents elected because they feel too little or too much.
