Amazon.com When the evil magician Sokurah (Torin Thatcher) shrinks Princess Parisa (Kathryn Grant) to roughly half the size of a Barbie doll, only one thing can restore her: the egg of a Roc. The Roc, of course, is a gigantic bird that lives on the remote island of Colossa. Sinbad (Kerwin Mathews) hires a crew of mutiny-minded convicts and sets sail, Sokurah in tow, but runs afoul of a fire-breathing dragon, a very ticked off Cyclops, and an equally crabby two-headed mutant Roc. This swashbuckling adventure was the first installment of the Sinbad films, and decades later it still has the power to hold viewers spellbound. Thatcher is terrific as the sinister, shaven-headed Sokurah, mugging perfectly for the camera, and Mathews is suitably dashing as Sinbad. As in all Sinbad films, though, the real stars are the Dynamation creations of Ray Harryhausen. The art of cinematic special effects has taken quantum leaps since 1958, which makes it so amazing that his work still looks as fine as it does. Harryhausen creates a world of fantasy where dragons and grotesque one-eyed humanoids battle to the death, one where it's very easy for adults to suspend their disbelief and watch the action with the wonder of a child. Seventh Voyage not only set the stage for further Sinbad adventures, but was a landmark film in the fantasy genre, opening doors for sword-and-sandal Hercules epics and countless other excursions. Few films, though, have the artistry that Ray Harryhausen's effects display in this movie. For great escapist fare for kids and adults alike, look no further than the first Sinbad film. --Jerry Renshaw

Amazon is everything they claim they are, their no-nonsense approach to the industry is a lesson that other would-be business' could learn from. I was very happy and will use them again. Bravo.
Not impressive for Blu-ray! March 31, 2009 Brady J. Sanabria 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
I love the work of Ray Harryhausen and over the years I've owned various formats of this favorite movie classic, but I have to be honest and say when playing the regular DVD version and then the new Blu-ray I didn't see a big difference in it's sharpness and definition and both my T.V. and Blu-ray player are brand new. I don't know what the company did, or better said didn't do but it didn't work too well.

Phillips (croyden, london) wow, just watched this dvd,it is the cleanest print ive seen, the special features are very interesting, not going to waste more time on the plot, other reviews go into that, the ray harryhausen interviews and quotes from other great special effects legends are touching, ray is loved by everyone, and me, this is the best of his movies i reckon, get this dvd, its a must have, enjoy big kids out there, dave flattop
If there is any Sinbad film you are going to watch make it this one. February 22, 2009 OverTheMoon (overthemoonreview@hotmail.com) While this Sinbad doesn't have the trademark beard it is the Sinbad film that makes all the others pale in comparison. One could say that this is the film that made Sinbad as a story just as popular as the stop-motion animation but that the other Sinbad films where carried along by the stop-motion animation. The story launches into action from get go. Sinbad encounters a Cyclops, a genie in a lamp and a magician. A princess is shrunk to fit in a palm and Sinbad must restore her by finding the ingredients for a special potion. While constantly dodging mutiny, Sinbad comes across a two-headed roc, giant hatchlings, a dragon and a warrior skeleton. All in all the story moves along at a fairly entertaining rapid pace and the Harryhausen effects are still some of the best of any that he did. The acting is above par and it has more of a Hollywood feel than its sequels. Like Jason of the Argonauts this has strong repeat viewing values.

We find ourselves as one of the crews as Sinbad (Kerwin Mathews) is tricked into the seventh voyage to restore his beloved princes Parisa (Kathryn Grant) to her previous stature. Finally a transfer to Blu-ray. Unfortunately, it is not really enhanced so you can see the grayness of the original film that looks like it is blown up for the big screen. Fortunately once you are watching the movie "who cares?" The most obvious actors are the creations of Ray Harryhausen. However, what brings this film to life is the music of Composer Bernard Herrmann. So for those of you that have never seen this film you are in for an unforgettable adventure. For those that saw it on the big screen you are in for a treat. Be sure to go back and listen to the voice-over commentaries. See Barani - the Genie (Richard Eyer) in the "The Invisible Boy" (1957) Forbidden Planet (Ultimate Collector's Edition)including "The Invisible Boy" (1957)
