Product Description A WOMAN JUST OUT OF JAIL MAKES A NEW LIFE IN A SMALL MAINE TOWN. SPECIAL FEATURE: THEATRICAL TRAILER. SUBTITLES IN ENGLISH AND FRENCH.
Amazon.com This well-acted drama won the Audience award at the 1996 Sundance Film Festival, causing a festival ruckus when several distributors entered a bidding war in response to the movie's positive buzz. When the movie was finally released, audience and critical response provided a sudden reality check: the movie's good to a point, but hardly worth the fuss it received at Sundance. Packing a miniseries' worth of melodrama into 117 minutes, the story centers on a young woman named Percy (Alison Elliott) who served prison time for manslaughter and arrives in a small town in Maine with hopes of beginning a new life. She works as a waitress in the Spitfire Grill, owned by Hannah (Ellen Burstyn), whose gruff exterior conceals a kind heart and precious little tolerance for the grill's regular customers, who cast their suspicions on Percy's mysterious past. The plot unfolds when Hannah holds a $100-per-entry essay contest to find a new owner for the grill. There's ample mystery surrounding the collected money, a local hermit who's really Hannah's shell-shocked Vietnam veteran son, and circumstances that lead the locals to adopt a lynch-mob mentality at Percy's expense. By the time Percy is nearly drowning in a raging river, The Spitfire Grill has taken its melodrama a few steps 'round the bend. Fine acting is the movie's saving grace, however, and newcomer Alison Elliott anchors The Spitfire Grill with a subtle, emotionally involving performance. Thanks to Elliott and Burstyn, you don't have to feel too guilty if you find yourself reaching for a Kleenex as the closing credits roll. --Jeff Shannon

Excellent movie, very much like Fried Green Tomatoes but better. Shows how easy it is to judge people when we dont know them. May 18, 2009 Kerin J. Freeman (New Zealand) In the same genre as Fried Green Tomatoes but sweeter. The protagonist is superb, as are the co-stars. Its an easy, gentle movie that sneaks up and questions our own morals and behaviour and how quickly we jump in to judge. A film of hope and redemption.
It's never too late to turn your life around. May 2, 2009 B. DeVries (St. Croix Falls, WI USA) I watched this movie with a friend when I was in college. It has been ten years since I first saw it, but I often think about different scenes from it and end up singing "There is a Balm in Gilead" over and over. Finally, I just had to buy a copy to own. It is just as inspiring as I remember.
One of my top 10 favorite movies. December 6, 2008 MB This movie is one of my favorite top 10 . I was so glad to find it on Amazon.com. It is one of those sleeper type movies, about a sleepy little town that wakes up when a young girl shows up who has pain in her young life no one should go through. It is about redemption, forgiveness and real love. MB
An American Classic film November 3, 2008 Judy (NE) The Spitfire Grill is a must see movie. It is a movie about human relationships, and about the difference one person can make. For the religious, it has a great theological message too!
One of the best films on redemption October 30, 2008 Tehila (Israel) I love this film. It isn't specifically a message on God's redemption, nor does it spell out a Christian world-view, but the film is seeped with redemption overtures. Many people have borrowed this film from me. Some hate sad films and are disapointed. Those that don't mind a dose of realism were touched and blessed. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants a better-than-average movie-night experience. Bring tissues. Not recommended for young children - they won't pick up on the overarching themes.
