Product Description By day, they're a bunch of losers, but by night, they're mystery men, a team of superhero wannabes who emerge from the darkness to fight the evil madman Cassanova Frankenstein and his disco-dancing henchmen.
Amazon.com Ever wonder if there was a class system in the world of superheroes? After all the big names like Superman, Batman, Spider-Man, etc., who were the supporting players? The folks assigned to the less-than-stellar gigs of saving only a small part of the world? According to this intermittently successful send-up of comic book heroism, there are indeed masked heroes who struggle and toil for their moment in the super sun. Based on the Dark Horse comic book series, Mystery Men follows the travails of three B-list avengers--Mr. Furious (Ben Stiller), the Shoveler (William H. Macy), and the Blue Raja (Hank Azaria)--as they fight to make themselves known to the citizens of Champion City, quite difficult to do when the flashy Captain Amazing (Greg Kinnear, never better) takes all the cool gigs and has product endorsements up the ying-yang. According to them, it's all a matter of timing--never mind that Mr. Furious never rises above a snit, or that the Blue Raja wears green. Their big break comes when Captain Amazing is abducted by the evil Casanova Frankenstein (Geoffrey Rush), and it's up to this motley crew to save Champion City. Blessed with a wondrously gifted comic cast and full of droll details, Mystery Men struggles in fits and spurts towards its climax. Transcendently witty in parts, it's also woefully sophomoric in others. Literally, this is the kind of movie in which someone gets off a brilliant line and then sits on a fork. Still, when this movie is rolling, it's gleefully on target, thanks primarily to the mordantly cocky Stiller and Janeane Garofalo as a latecomer to the superhero gang; her secret weapon is a bowling ball in which her dead father's head is encased. The comic chemistry between these two is fierce, and when you add the dryly funny Macy and the endearing Azaria (who finally gets a chance to let loose with his comic gifts), it's a hilarious joyride. Too bad that the gas tank is only half-full; this stunning cast deserves a first-rate vehicle. With Tom Waits as a weapons expert, Claire Forlani as the requisite babe, and Paul Reubens as the Spleen, the world's most flatulent superhero. --Mark Englehart

Top Ten Best Parodies Ever May 18, 2009 D. R. Slider (Williamston, MI) Mystery Men offers one of my all time favorite movie quotes as the Shoveller says "We've go a blind date with destiny...and it looks like she's ordered lobster." Great script. Terrific performaces by Ben Stiller, William H. Macy, Jeanine Garrafalo, Tom Waits, Geoffrey Rush, and the rest of the cast. It's a great parody of all the graphic novel based super hero films.
Great Superhero Spoof Movie May 2, 2009 D. Allen (Dallas, TX) This is a great superhero spoof movie and it catches some of the most popular actors at their best. By the way, this movie is waaaay better than the WATCHMEN movie. This movie has some very funny moments. The Sphinx says, "He who questions training only trains himself at asking questions." Ha!!! Pee-Wee Herman as the Spleen whose super power is passing noxious gases because he was cursed by a gypsie who decreed that he who smelled it must for ever be the one who delt it! Watch it and see if I'm right. A must see and a great Saturday night family movie.
Campy, But Oh So Wonderful... April 24, 2009 Mason Bundschuh (Las Vegas, NV United States) Ok, so it is evident that this is not everyone's cup'o'tea. But in my opinion this, campy, colorful, ridiculous super-hero spoof remains one of my favorite all-time movies. (And I'm no cinema-slouch) Think of the creators of Spinal Tap making a spoof of a Baz Luhrman flick. The first time I saw it, the surreal, "Brazil"esque, cinematography caught me off-guard. But it wasn't long before the tight-knit, (surprisingly understated) comedy writing caught me. On the surface, the humor is over-the-top, with colorful, cartoony characterizations, but more often than not the delivery is either dead-pan or "real-world", making the juxtaposation of people dressed in silly costumes, fighting disco-ninjas that much more funny. Unlike many pop-culture comedies, Mystery Men doesn't slog around much in sexual or juvenile humor. Sure you've got the Spleen cutting limburgher cheese, but the delivery is way above stuff like Nat'nl Lampoon, et al. The humor is far more akin to, say, the Simpsons or Galaxy Quest than other comedies. Overall, I'd recommend it to anyone who really loves pop-culture, super-hero stuff, and isn't expecting "Dude, where's my car? II"
Average for any genre. April 18, 2009 Amber (Georgia) The couple of times I've watched this movie I have enjoyed it, but it's very predictable in humor and plot. I could see many of the plot "twists" coming a mile away the first time I saw it. But all of the actors clearly enjoy their roles, and their enthusiasm can be quite infectious. To me, the best character is The Bowler, although I thought The Shovel was pretty cool too. Both of them had excellent lines and weapons, although his was a little more obvious in its uses. Hank Azaria as The Blue Rajah was funny but his choice of weapon seemed to have been chosen "last minute". Mr Furious never really did anything, and The Spleen was just disgusting. Still, fun movie with interesting characters. Never going to be on any of my lists of favorites, but I could watch it a couple more times.
Lightweight, Goofy & Fun March 27, 2009 Craig Connell (Lockport, NY USA) This was different, that's for sure. Just look at the cast - talk about oddballs! William H. Macy and Ben Stiller were the stars, although a bunch of actors almost share the spotlight, in this farce about superhero-wannabees. The most outrageous was played by Paul Reubens of "Pee Wee Herman" fame. There is lots of humor, garish colors and no lulls. It's a pretty entertaining, lightweight comedy with nothing but goofy characters, all of whom want to be heroes a la Superman, Batman, Spiderman, you name. They have talents in strange areas, however, that the real heroes don't (and don't want to!). It's silly, but you know that going on. It's also a film you can watch in installments and not really miss any continuity. The language was tame so kids could enjoy this, too.
