A worthy companion piece to 1991's Boyz N the Hood, John Singleton's Baby Boy expresses compassionate but unforgiving criticism of young, African American black men who lead reckless, irresponsible lives while blithely blaming racism for their chronic disadvantage. That's already enough to make this a provocative and emotionally challenging film, but Singleton injects his drama with such passionate vitality that it never seems inflammatory; instead, in presenting this portrait of a confused and conflicted 20-year-old black man named Jody (Tyrese Gibson), Singleton is both affectionate and accusatory, lending Baby Boy an edgy, timeless wisdom that other, less courageous films could never hope to offer. Unemployed and living with his 36-year-old mother (A.J. Johnson), Jody has fathered children from two young mothers and seems destined for an early grave. He never knew his father, but his mother's new boyfriend Melvin (played to perfection by Ving Rhames) is an ex-con with streetwise maturity that Jody, in time, will come to recognize and respect. This generational dynamic is the lifeblood of Singleton's central theme; Jody can follow Melvin's example or fall into the trap of lawlessness personified by Rodney (Snoop Dogg), a violent gangsta who arrives to threaten Jody's tenuous chance at a respectable adulthood. A young black man, after spending too many years living at home with his mother and not acting like a real father to his child, finally accepts his responsibilites as a man and a father. It is very realistic to things that go on in some, not all, urban neighborhoods. It's not fake and is well directed by John Singleton. If you have never seen "Baby Boy", then you definitely should.

"Baby Boy" is an exciting film filled with drama and romance, yet it has its moments where it had some sensitive content. Though it is one of my favorite movies it can be a bit stereotypical on young black men. This movie is about a misgudied 20 year year old who tries to juggle 2 kids by 2 different women and his mother's new boyfriend throughout the difficult times. Louisiane

Well john singleton is my favorite director so I instantly love this movie. It has a good story about a young man who is having trouble growing up. This movie is always on BET so you can watch it on that channel but its best to buy it.

This is movie is terrible....I wish that I could get the two hours I wasted on this movie....I don't like it. And could we sprinkle a little more vile language though this. Jody....grow the....up! And stop having babies with everyone.

Wonderful cast and Great Performance by Tyrese and Taraji Henderson. I have watched this movie over and over and wanted to upgrade to DVD. Add this one to your collection!
