Amazon.com essential video Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones star as Gus McCrae and Woodrow Call, aging cowboys and former Texas rangers and who organize a 2,500 mile cattle drive for one last great adventure in this excellent 1989 miniseries adaptation of Larry McMurtry's novel. The best friends, who steal the herd from a gang of Mexican cattle rustlers, drive their herd from Texas to Montana, battling horse thieves, angry Indian tribes, and a renegade half-breed killer named Blue Duck (Frederic Forrest) on a mission of revenge. The excellent cast also includes Robert Urich as cardsharp and former Ranger Jake Spoon, Anjelica Huston as McCrae's old flame Clara Allen, Danny Glover, Ricky Schroder, Diane Lane, Chris Cooper, D.B. Sweeney, Steve Buscemi, and even a small role for author Larry McMurtry. Australian director Simon Wincer shows a tremendous capacity for balancing sweeping drama and intimacy against the gorgeous landscape of the American Southwest, giving a grandly epic feel to the film despite its small-screen target and limited budget, and for forging memorable characters of even the smallest supporting parts. The heart of the drama belongs to McCrae and Call, memorably etched by Duvall and Jones as the last of the range romantics. In the age of revisionist Westerns, this excellent cattle-drive drama nicely maintains an old-fashioned feeling while still showing the dark side of the American West. Winner of seven Emmy Awards and responsible for two miniseries sequels (Return to Lonesome Dove and Dead Man's Walk) and a TV series. --Sean Axmaker

Lonesome Dove June 28, 2009 Littlehouse1213 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
Don't know why I am not surprised with this day and age that Amazon would be any different than all the Banks and Morgage Companies that are out selling misrepresented goods! Knowing well that my brother could reciet chapter and verse, I ordered the $11.95 CD of Lonsome Dove for his 69th Birthday. After a call to wish him well, I was to find out that the 2 Disc CD is NOT COMPLETE! Somewhere MISSING 2 Hours. I m not a computer wiz I did not see anything were this was mentioned.....WAY TO GO AMAZON!! NOW you are in my same BOAT as E-BAY! ALL BAD!!!
Greatest Western of the Modern era June 27, 2009 Daniel Hurley (Chesapeake, VA.) This book follows McMurtry so well, as the director notes in the bonus section, that there are virtually no dialogue changes. The DVD comes in a two DVD set with the four parts split evenly between the two with the bonus features as well, The bonus features include interviews with casts, director and author and show some of the films highlights including each one's favorite part. The outdoor scenes, script and acting is top notch. The supreme benefit of this epic is the time spent in character development that allows one to get to know the characters so thoroughly and appreciate the bonds between these men looking for perhaps their last great adventure with young cowboys in tow. Tommy Lee Jones as Texas Ranger Woodrow F. call, possibly his greatest role, and Robert Duval as captain Augustus McCrae are outstanding with such a great cast with Danny Glover Robert Urich, D. B. Sweeny, the surprising Rick Schroder, Diane Lane, Anjeclica Houston and the excellent character actor Timothy Scott who plays Pea. The DVD starts in ends with each four parts and, as the director states in the bonus section, it was literally four movies made into one. The scenes are so realistic that even the cattle were bought in Mexico to not just replicate scrawny worn looking animals but they were all those things making the trail dive more realistic. Tremendous action packed film full of realistic scenes and when Tommy Lee Jones (or his stunt man) slams his horse into a bully's, it certainly looks and feels real. Watching all four sets was delightful but the last one was exhausting as the latter part is one of the saddest in movie history but it pays tribute to the characters played by these great actors as each loss is heartfelt. The dialogue is just tremendous and well delivered, when McCrae (Duval) announces he is going to town for some fun, Call (Jones) remarks that McCrae hasn't done enough work to go to town, McCrae responds, that Woodrow works way too hard and that it is up to him to off set that. Wonderful film, excellent DVD set and it notes 374 minutes so I believe it's the full cut.
One of the best western's ever June 17, 2009 Jeepstir (Lanham, MD USA) There are enough other reviews here with details of the movie-no need for me to duplicate any of that info. Suffice it to say, IMO, this is without question one of the finest western's ever filmed. Just MAKE SURE, if you buy it, you get the entire full-length movie!
This is unbelievable June 14, 2009 John Wilkerson (Dillon, Colorado United States) 0 out of 22 found this review helpful
I can not even bring myself to finish watching this movie. When I first started watching it I was somewhat interested since I had heard all of the hype. After watching 20 mins I felt like I was in the Twilight Zone. I could not believe that anyone could think this was worth watching. Then I thought I might be missing something or not understanding some type of weird humor. I have heard people rant about not being able to wait until the series came to DVD. While watching the 20 mins it felt like some sort of joke that I didn't get. Now after trying to give it a second and third chance and watching different parts of the movie and hoping it would get better I now am done. This is one of, if not the worst, movies I have ever seen and I can not believe someone was able to talk these well known actors into acting in this movie.
LARGER THAN LIFE June 3, 2009 Geary A., Jones 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Few westerns are in the same league as LONESOME DOVE. Simon Wincer captured the heart of Larry McMurtry's beautiful story about a 2,500 mile trail drive. Robert Duvall ( in what I believe to be his finest performance ), and Tommy Lee Jones as two ex-Texas Rangers are perfect in this amazingly, powerful epic ( the rest of the cast is pretty amazing as well ). No western collection should be without this mesmerizing, masterpiece.
