Danny DeVito's adaptation of the Roald Dahl book for children is mostly just fine, helped along quite a bit by the charming performance of Mara Wilson (Mrs. Doubtfire) as young Matilda, a brilliant girl neglected by her stupid, self-involved parents (DeVito and Rhea Perlman). Ignored at home, Matilda escapes into a world of reading, exercising her mind so much she develops telekinetic powers. Good thing, too: sent off to a school headed by a cruel principal, Matilda needs all the help she can get. DeVito takes a highly stylized approach that is sometimes reminiscent of Barry Sonnenfeld (director of Get Shorty, a DeVito production), and his judgment is not the best in some matters, such as letting the comic-scary sequences involving the principal go on too long. But much of the film is delightful and funny. --Tom Keogh

    4 out of 5 stars Matilda   March 16, 2010

The movie is fantastic I have seen it before I just wanted my own copy. I purchased it from moviesonsale and I would not recomend them. They said it was used in new condition, well it has some glitches where the digital stop and does nothing for about 15 seconds then continues. If they sell like new that should mean like new without glitches in it. No fault of AMAZON it was MOVIESONSALE.

    5 out of 5 stars I love this!   March 3, 2010
    J. Eckardt (Sacramento, California United States)
I have loved this movie since I first saw it on television when I was a child. I am glad to have the special edition with the additional content. It enhances the movie as well as the world it is set in.

    5 out of 5 stars Matilda   February 8, 2010
Hi my name is Kamry Lawson have you ever seen Matilda I consider it to be one of my favorite movies of all time. It's about a little girl who used magic which we know me all want to use magic. The characters names are Matilda, Lavender, Miss Honey, and the mean Trunchbull. Matilda parents were the worse ever imagine your parents leaving you in the car when you were first born. By the time she was three she learned how to cooked pancakes everyday her parents, and brother would walk out, and leave her. When they left she would go to the library and sit in the corner, and read. At the age of seven she went to school. The only reason she got to go was because her dad made a plan with the Trunchbull. On her first day she met a girl named Lavender the two girls were in the same class, and evidently they became great friends. They were both in the same class Matilda favorite teacher was Miss Honey. If you where bad the Trunchbull would put you in the chokey it had holes and nails in the inside of the door. She would lock you in there for hours and leave. Matilda' parents was moving, but she got adopted by Miss Honey the two girls were happy living together.

5 out of 5 stars A Gifted Child, A Caring Teacher, and an Odious Child-Hating School Principal   January 25, 2010
    Jan Peczkis (Chicago IL, USA)
If you are a teacher or student who would like to get back vicariously at an unfair school principal, this movie is especially for you. The principal in this movie, Agatha Trunchbull, is worse than a martinet: She is diabolically mean, even reminiscent of some of the SS women in charge of the defenseless prisoners at Nazi-German concentration camps during WWII.

Eight-year old prodigy Matilda had been the offspring of parents who had no time for her. They cared only about money and pleasure. Her father was a proudly-dishonest used-car dealer, about to be busted by the FBI. She basically raised herself. When entering school, Matilda met her 2nd-grade teacher, Miss Honey, and soon showed that she was years ahead of all the other students in terms of academic skills. This teacher appreciated her talents and her increasingly-obvious magical skills, took her under her wing, and became her closest friend. Miss Honey exhibited a decidedly different vision of school teaching, and childrens' needs, than did the principal. Miss Honey was no less afraid of the principal than the children of that school.

So how to deal with the indifferent parents and the horrible child-hating principal? Watch this hilarious movie and you will be entertained and surprised.
