    Amazon.com essential video
Thanks to the ambitious vision of director Tim Burton, the blockbuster hit of 1989 delivers the goods despite an occasionally spotty script, giving the caped crusader a thorough overhaul in keeping with the crime fighter's evolution in DC Comics. Michael Keaton strikes just the right mood as the brooding "Dark Knight" of Gotham City; Kim Basinger plays Gotham's intrepid reporter Vicki Vale; and Jack Nicholson goes wild as the maniacal and scene-stealing Joker, who plots a takeover of the city with his lethal Smilex gas. Triumphant Oscar-winning production design by the late Anton Furst turns Batman into a visual feast, and Burton brilliantly establishes a darkly mythic approach to Batman's legacy. Danny Elfman's now-classic score propels the action with bold, muscular verve. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Batman (2 Disc Special Edition) DVD   February 8, 2010
    M. D. Lambert
I purchased this as a Christmas gift, and while there was some misunderstanding initially about the product, everything turned out all right and he loved his gift. Another successful Christmas!

5 out of 5 stars Still the best Batman   February 5, 2010

Not much to say that hasn't been said, this is a great movie. The Blu-ray transfer is well done making it look as good as it did when I saw it in the theaters.

5 out of 5 stars dark knight band wagon riders need to shut up because you don't know a thing about batman!   February 3, 2010
    Jorge A. Lacayo
to all you dark knight band wagon riders, you don't know crap about batman people. this film was based on Frank miller's "the dark knight returns", where batman PROUDLY KILLS PEOPLE. the reason for this choice at the time was because that comic is considered the best batman comic ever written and it made batman dark and grimey, of course this was in the eighties, while you all were still in your daddy's bag. before you write a review and try to sound knowledgeable, do a wikipedia search or something, because this film is a masterpiece. it combines Alan
Moore's "the killing Joke" with Frank miller's "The dark knight Returns", both considered some of the darkest and best batman books. you fools that think your big batman fans really aren't, otherwise you would know all this. this film impeccably creates that dark feeling that the comics had in the eighties. i hate all these people that see dark knight and now totally feel like disrespecting tim burton's vision. i loved the dark knight but this movie is just as good and deserves mutual respect. jack nicholson as the joker was amazing and it'll always be debated which joker was better heath or jack. personally i liked jack waaaaaaaaay better, but heath did an awesome job too and did deserve the oscar. i can't wait until 20 years have passed and they make another film with batman and the joker and all these wannabe fools that think they are batman fans, start to praise the new film and bash the dark knight for being out dated and lame.

    5 out of 5 stars Batman   January 22, 2010
    Arnita D. Brown (USA)
Gotham City: dark, dangerous, 'protected' only by a mostly corrupt police department. Despite the best efforts of D.A. Harvey Dent and police commissioner Jim Gordon, the city becomes increasingly unsafe...until a Dark Knight arises. We all know criminals are a superstitious, cowardly lot...so his disguise must be able to strike terror into their hearts. He becomes a bat. Enter Vicky Vale, a prize-winning photo journalist who wants to uncover the secret of the mysterious "bat-man". And enter Jack Napier, one-time enforcer for Boss Grissom, horribly disfigured after a firefight in a chemical factory...who, devoid of the last vestiges of sanity, seizes control of Gotham's underworld as the psychotic, unpredictable Clown Prince of Crime...the Joker. Gotham's only hope, it seems, lies in this dark, brooding vigilante. And just how does billionaire playboy Bruce Wayne fit into all of this. Tim Burton takes a darker twist to an over the top TV show that was loved by everyone. With a cool soundtrack by Prince and and awesome setting, please watch "Batman", it's a true classic.

3 out of 5 stars Good for it's time, But pales in comparison to batman begins and the dark knight   January 9, 2010
    Ahmed R. Braimah
After gangster Jack Napier [Jack Nicholson, In the role of a lifetime] supposedly dies by falling into a big tank of toxic waste, He survives only to become The Joker and in his reign of terror over gotham city, He becomes a problem for both Batman/Bruce Wayne [Michael Keaton] and the citizens at large. As a kid, i loved this movie to death and as a huge batman fan, I thought for a long time that this was the definitive screen version of the caped crusader. After seeing and very immediately becoming very addicted with both batman begins and the dark knight, I decided to seek out a copy of the 2-disc special edition of this movie. Unfortunately, i had to get the 8-disc box set which also included all the sequels [2 of which i refuse to keep and will not watch again, you know which 2 they are] but i got it at wal-mart for only $16 so i'm not really complaining too much. I watched this film last week for the first time since i wore out my old vhs copy of this movie back in the late-90's as a kid. After 2 viewings, I now feel differently about this movie. This movie seems rather outdated now and at times even dull and boring. The dialogue also seems forced sometimes [Especially in the scenes Keaton and Basinger share] and batman seems like a supporting character in his own film [Bruce Wayne is almost nonexistant at times] which is a shame because to this day, i still love Keaton's presence as both Batman and Bruce Wayne. The film improves whenever The Joker shows up. Jack Nicholson clearly steals the show here, As he's undeniably funny as Batman's arch nemesis. Another high point that remains in this movie is the terrific and timeless score by the amazing Danny Elfman. Prince's music here is good too, But it doesn't fit in with this movie. After over 20 years, The look of the set pieces in this movie are still pretty impressive. The movie starts well, But it falls apart at times in the middle, But it does finish on a pretty good note. The action scenes are also pretty good for the most part, But the story is sorely lacking. For instance, Much more could've been done to better explain who Batman/Bruce Wayne is and the romance between Bruce Wayne and Vicki Vale was needless and only served as filler and the story also should've been darkened a lot more. Many claim this is a darker version of Batman, I disagree. While there are occasional dark undertones lurking here and there, For the most part, This is a pretty campy movie due to the Joker's over the top comedic antics all throughout this film [Although this isn't as campy as the 60's tv show or Batman Forever and Batman & Robin]. Unlike some Batman fans, I welcome the fact that Batman kills some of his villains in this movie [I always wished Batman had more of a vigilante edge to his character]. For its time, This movie probably was the quintessential batman movie. But now, Some 21 years later, This movie has lost most of its appeal and has been totally eclipsed by way better Batman movies. However, It deserves to be watched at least once for its historical importance to both the history of Batman and comic book-based movies in general. Followed by three sequels, Beginning with Batman Returns.
