Steven Spielberg, proving he's one of the few modern filmmakers who has the visual fluency to be capable of making a great silent film, took a melodramatic, D.W. Griffith-inspired approach to filming Alice Walker's novel. His tactics made the film controversial, but also a popular hit. You can argue with the appropriateness of Spielberg's decision, but his astonishing facility with images is undeniable--from the exhilarating and eye-popping opening shots of children playing in paradisiacal purple fields to the way he conveys the brutality of a rape by showing hanging leather belts banging against the head of the shaking bed. In a way it's a shame that Whoopi Goldberg, a stage monologist who made her screen debut in this movie, went on to become so famous, because it was, in part, her unfamiliarity that made her understated performance as Celie so effective. (This may be the first and last time that the adjective understated can be applied to Goldberg.) Nominated for 11 Academy Awards, including best picture and actress (supporting players Oprah Winfrey and Margaret Avery were also nominated), it was quite a scandal--and a crushing blow to Spielberg--when it won none. --Jim Emerson

 A Classic & A Favorite February 22, 2010

I remember seeing this in the theater for the first time. Aside from the tears it had such a powerful impact on me, I have never forgotten it. To have it now on DVD with the special features is a great pleasure. There are special people in the business who I will watch no matter what and Spielberg and Whoopi are two near the top of the list. This movie had all the elements which make a great one in my estimation. The changes that were made from the book makes the story work on film. I have no argument with what was done to make the transition from a remarkable book into a beautiful, moving and important movie. My complaint is not with Spielberg, but with the Academy that allowed no Oscars to go to this movie--proving just how political those awards are. I recommend this as a must see movie that should be in everyone's library.

Item (DVD Used)was a gift that arrived in timely fashion, (even before schedule)and in good condition: I would buy from this vendor again.
This compelling story (The Color Purple) follows the years of struggles of various young black girls/women in rural Georgia. Certainly a drama but with many light moments and thoroughly interesting characters. A glimpse of early 20th century life of one southern black farm community as it grows into modern times/comveniences & changing male/female relationships. Some explicit dialogue/scenes.

One of the best movies of all time January 28, 2010
M (I wait behind the wall, gnawing away at your reality)
I remember seeing this movie a long time ago when i was younger, and decided to watch it again. Having read the book itself before I saw this movie again, I was better able to appreciate it (and remember more about the movie!)
If you've read the book, you'll note quite a few differences, but most of these differences are minor, because the book was written in a different way than most other novels, so I have no doubt that it took some thought and planning to turn it into movie form - and hey, a great job was done by everyone - the cameras, directors, and actors. Some of the scenes are truly incredible. I loved the one with Shug singing and leading her friends to church and being all like 'See, even sinners have soul' as well as Celie standing up to her husband and then cursing him.
The ending was a tearjerker, and I'm glad to see I wasn't the only one. Oprah and Whoopi Goldberg both did fantastic jobs in their roles as Celie and Sophia. If I could give this movie ten stars instead of five, I would!
