Amazon.com Ethan Hawke, fresh faced and full of determination, tackles the icy wilds and rowdy boom towns of Alaska in Disney's 1991 adaptation of Jack London's turn-of-the-century gold rush classic. Though somewhat tamed for young audiences, the story of a city kid who befriends a feral half-wolf/half-dog orphan while learning to survive the dangers of nature and man has its share of peril and rousing scenes of wilderness adventure. But the humans are upstaged by both the animals (the standoff between White Fang and a wild brown bear is a highlight) and the Alaskan landscape, from the snow-covered mountains and frozen lakes of winter to the rich green forests and whitecap rivers of summer. The scenes of dogfights and wild wolves hunting game are carefully shot to avoid bloodshed (the opening disclaimer takes pains to remind viewers that all such scenes have been simulated), but they may still be too intense for young children. Recommended for 9 and up. --Sean Axmaker

Rock-Solid Alaskan Adventure Tale June 26, 2009 Craig Connell (Lockport, NY USA)
Prior to seeing this, I remember reading a lot of good reviews on it. Well, the critics were right about this one: it was good. It's an excellent adventure film that really gets you involved with the story. The story, off the famous book written by Jack London, involves a young adult male's adventures during the gold rush days of Alaska at the end of the 19th century. Some of the Alaskan scenery in here is just magnificent. Here's a movie I would love to see with a sharp Blu-Ray transfer. I have talked to a couple of people who have been around the world and they both said Alaska had the most incredible scenery of any place they'd been, and you see evidence of that in this movie. They did a nice job with the action scenes in here: not too much, not too little and pretty realistic. The dog-fighting scenes aren't pleasant, but they aren't bloody, either. The villains, led by James Remar, are nasty but not profane. This is not a typical Disney film, at least at the time of its release, because the violence is intense at times and there is some profanity. It's a rugged story about rugged people in a rugged land. These adventurers had to be rough to survive. Ethan Hawke plays the young man-hero whom we all root for, and the way he builds a relationship to wolf-dog "White Fang" is touching to view. The movie offers everything but humor but they do throw one funny line in at the end, by one of the villains, no less!
disappointment! April 27, 2009 Jean Gutchewsky 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I am SO glad to get this from you! I was afraid I was going to have to go through my files and look for the invoice. I gave this tape to my grandaughter in her easter basket because she loves this book!! We then went out of town for two weeks. When I talked to my daughter from out of town she said that the first time they watched it the end of the tape cut out and they never got to see the end. It is a defective tape and it was a "new" tape. What do you suggest? Can I get a replacement? Thank you.
Exciting film April 7, 2009 Theater Director This film is wonderful. I, too, regret that the DVD wasn't prepared in wide-screen format, but it is still a super film--great for family viewing.
White Fang August 29, 2008 John Talbott (Dixon,IL USA) This is one great movie. Especially if you love wolves or not. It really is an excellent movie to watch over and over.
Walt Disney's white fang August 26, 2008 RoyalRaider (USA) Please bring this classic film to Widescreen . I have been waiting and waiting and waiting for this film to come to Widescreen . I will not buy this until it has Widescreen. It deserves much more respect than just low grade Full screen. !!
