Amazon.com essential video Penny Marshall's popular 1992 comedy sheds light on a little-known chapter of American sports history with its story of a struggling team in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. The league was formed when the recruiting of soldiers during World War II resulted in a shortage of men's baseball teams. The AAGPBL continued after the war (until 1954), and Marshall's movie depicts the league in full swing, beginning when a savvy baseball scout (Jon Lovitz) finds a pair of promising new players in small-town Oregonian sisters (Geena Davis, Lori Petty). The sisters are signed to play for the Rockford Peaches near Chicago, whose new manager (Tom Hanks) is a former home-run king who wrecked his career with alcoholism. They're all a bunch of underdogs, and Marshall (with a witty script by Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel) does a fine job of establishing a colorful team of supporting players including Madonna and (in her movie debut) Rosie O'Donnell. It's a conventional Hollywood sports story (Marshall's never been one to take dramatic risks), but the stellar cast is delightful, and the movie's filled with memorable moments, witty dialogue, and agreeable sentiment. And just remember: there's no crying in baseball! --Jeff Shannon

simply beautiful! February 2, 2010 Lucy (Florida) this film is about a group of seniors that reminisce their days playing on the women's baseball team in the 1940s. tom hanks plays their coach. this is the movie where rosie o'donnell and madonna also started up a friendship...i guess they found that they had some things in common. they made a great team together. also i love "This Used To Be My Playground". it's a sure tearjerker and heartwarming. it's a perfect song for this movie!!! it makes me want to reminisce of my younger days. the lyrics are haunting and very sad. this is only one of the movies where madonna makes a decent, good actress.
A League of Their Own January 31, 2010 Josie B. Wash Amazing women who help change what and how women are seen and can do must watch really enjoyed
A League of Their Own January 30, 2010 Arnita D. Brown (USA) In the farm of Oregon Dottie Henson and Kit Keller are working on the farm. Sisters that do love each other, except when it comes to baseball. Kit wants to play in the league but is upset to hear that it is Dottie who is chosen to play for the AAPGL. (All American Pro Girls League) Dottie refuses to play unless Kit can come along. AAPGL was only made because of the World War II and all of the man were in the war. Along the way to the stadium they meet Marla Hooch who is a great hitter, but to most people not the prettiest girl. When they are going to try out they meet Doris and Mae because Doris threw a baseball at Dottie who caught it impressing Doris. They girls find out their new manager is Jimmy Dugan. Jimmy Dugan drinks a lot and is the worst manager until Dottie get through to him and he becomes a better person. Miss Cuthbert makes sure the rules are followed, no boys, no drinking or smoking until Mae poisons her meal. The girls go to party and Marla who had been overlooked a lot is noticed by a guy named Nelson. Dottie's husband Bob is in the army and when news comes that a man in the army has been killed it turns out to be Betty Spaghetti. After awhile, Kit feels that once again like at home she is behind Dottie's shadow. Dottie notices it to and asks to be transferred to another team. Of course Mr. Lovitz doesn't want the best player to be transferred so he has Kit transferred to Racine. Kit feels that Dottie did this on purpose. Kit plays for the Racine while Dottie plays for Rockford. In the final scene Dottie is crashed into by Kit and she drops the ball, letting Racine win, making Kit have her own stardom instead of being in Dottie's shadow. The girls have a reunion and they remember the fun they had together. Stylish, warm and fun to watch.
"I Loved You In 'The Wizard Of Oz.' " An All-Star Cast Makes This A Home Run. What The..? MADONNA?!!! MAMMA MIA. January 17, 2010 HAMLET Based on a true story, this film is a crowd-pleasing hit. Boasting an all-star cast including Geena Davis, Rosie O'Donnell and-what the hell? MADONNA?-Yes, THAT Madonna. The singer is in rare form in her film debut. I wish she'd given up singing, and become a full-time actress (don't get me wrong; I like Madonna and her songs, but this film proves she can definitely act). Tom Hanks, Geena Davis, Rose O'Donnell, Jon Lovitz (in a hilarious cameo), Bill Pullman and ESPECIALLY Madonna do an excellent job in this thrilling movie. "There's no crying in baseball." The music (by Hans Zimmer) is brilliant. The directing is spot-on. Look for a brief appearance by Tea Leoni ("Deep Impact," "Jurassic Park III") and a rare on-screen appearance by Garry Marshall (director of "The Princess Diaries" and its sequel). The comedy meshes very well with the dramatic moments. Rated PG.
A great film for the entire family! December 3, 2009 Paul Tognetti (Cranston, RI USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
When you stop and think about it out of the thousands upon thousands of feature films that have been made over the decades only a relative handful have been about baseball. I think that the best baseball film ever made was "Eight Men Out" which tells the story of the 1919 Black Sox scandal. Also high on my list of faves are "The Natural", "Field of Dreams", "Bang The Drum Slowly" and the 1992 comedy-drama "A League of Their Own". In case you are not familiar with this film "A League of Their Own" stars Tom Hanks and Geena Davis and recalls the story of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League which operated in several midwestern cities from 1943-1954. I fell in love with this film the first time I saw it more than 15 years ago.
The All-American Girls Professional Baseball League was a by-product of World War II. For a time in the early 1940's it appeared the Major League Baseball might actually have to shut down because so many of its players were going overseas to fight. A group of investors decided that a girls professional league might just be the ticket to temporarily fill the void being left by the men. Although this is a fictionalized account of the AAGPBL you will come away from this film with a pretty good idea of what took place all those years ago. What began as an experiment actually lasted for more than a decade! Tom Hanks stars as Rockford Peaches manager Jimmy Dugan, a retired all-star player whose career was cut short by the bottle. The film also stars Geena Davis in the role of Dottie Hinson star catcher for the Peaches and Madonna as the rough and tumble center fielder "All the Way" Mae Mordabito. But for me Lori Petty clearly steals the show as Dottie Hinson's insecure kid sister Kit who also plays for the Peaches. Director Penny Marshall does a spendid job here and I found myself really beginning to care a great deal about all of these charactors during the course of this fine motion picture.
If you are like me you will experience the full range of emotions watching "A League of Their Own". You will laugh out loud, cheer on the team and even shed a tear or two along the way. Although the All-American Girl's Professional Baseball League is no more its legacy lives on at the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown NY. I have seen the exhibit and it is quite impressive indeed. "A League of Their Own" is one of those rare films that can be seen and enjoyed by the entire family. There really is something in this film for just about everyone. I find that I enjoy this film more each time I see it. Very highly recommended!
