The Spice Girls have plenty of personality, and that helps make up for the lapses in inspiration that keep their feature debut from being a truly good movie and potential cult piece. As with Richard Lester's Hard Day's Night, Spice World is about a few days in the collective life of the all-female British group; and the banter is suggestively representative of how the Girls all speak to one another. But the value of individual scenes is woefully inconsistent, reaching a low point in a dumb sequence when a gaggle of extraterrestrials hit them up for autographs. Fortunately, the film is full of great people, or in some cases good people doing great things: Richard E. Grant, Roger Moore, Alan Cummings, Mark McKinney, and tons of cameos from the likes of Elton John, Elvis Costello, and Bob Hoskins. You don't have to be 11 years old and female to get some enjoyment out of this movie, but it might help. --Tom Keogh

    5 out of 5 stars Oh the 90's...   May 25, 2009

Fine, this is a silly movie and if you weren't a fan, you probably won't get that much from this now. Solution: don't buy the DVD.

BUT if like me, you are (/were) a fan of the Spice Girls, give Spice World a try (or another try)! I watched this movie in the fifth grade when it first came out and I loved it then. That said, I'm not always sure I knew what I was thinking back then, so I was inclined to think that 12 years later, I'd find the movie ridiculous. My friend with whom I watched this also had the same expectations. But nope, we were pleasantly surprised to find that Spice World was still a great movie. It was ridiculous, but great.

Maybe it was the lowered expectations, but really, if you take this movie for what it is - a film about the Spice Girls having fun and making something for their fans - it is very entertaining. Again, it wasn't made for the Academy (though the acting wasn't so bad), it was made for fans. You can sing along to the songs that were their hits in the 90's and laugh at the jokes and implausible scenarios as loudly as you did in 1997. It's a laugh; don't take it too seriously!

5 out of 5 stars Actually a fun movie, lots of energy and the songs are not bad at all.   May 2, 2009

I always felt that a lot of our British cousins across the ocean were a bit too merciless in panning the S.G. as just another hack pop group who couldnt carry a tune. I got the DVD for my daughter when she was 5 and the Scary doll. One day I just put in the VHS and watched. Yes it was silly, at times it was a kind of duh humour that you may have heard before in one way or another. But it was never dull. I enjoyed their good natured shenanigans and thought that they actually did a good job for a showcase movie.

Im sorry that as a group they didnt last as long nor did their reunion concert that I attended with my then 13 year old daughter catapult them into a new vibrancy. They had the energy and the talent imho. Unfortunatley wether or not it was bad management, chemistry gone bad or just wanting family life it didnt happen.
But I felt also that the GoGos also ended too soon as well. Sei La vie.

This movie is one of my favorite movies, not only because I am a fan of the Spice Girls, but I thought it was fun to watch. I always watched this movie with friends during sleepovers and it was always fun to sing along and repeat all the lines to the movie. Its more of a movie you may enjoy only if you are a fan of the Spice Girls and their music.

is you remember the spice girls like i did when you where like 8 years old and where a big fan of the movie. You will still love Spice World. It kinda still holds up if you always been a Spice Girl fan, but if this is your first time watching it you will probably say this is the stupidest movie ever. And you would be right. Girl Power!

Well, I remember this being my favorite show when I was 11 or 12. Couldn't believe they have this movie on DVD so I had to buy it. It's pretty much a joke of a movie but because I still have some love for the Spice Girls I was glad I'm able to have this for my collection. It's one of those movies that you get a bunch of your girlfriends together and remember the hype of the Spice Girl era and have a pretty good laugh.
