Amazon.com essential video Inspired by the 1960s TV series that starred James Garner in the title role, this lightweight Western from 1994 proved to be a surprising box-office hit. Well, maybe not such a big surprise, since it's from the star and director of the Lethal Weapon movies, and operates with a similar combination of mainstream plotting and easygoing humor. Mel Gibson stars as card-playing gunslinger Brett Maverick, who meets up with wily gambler Annabelle Bransford (Jodie Foster) and a marshal named Zane Cooper (James Garner, trading his old role to Gibson) on his way to the World Series of poker in St. Louis. Maverick's trying to raise the $5,000 needed to join the high-stakes contest, but that's easier said than done due to a lot of unscrupulous competition and a twisting plot of tricks and deceptions. It's all played for laughs and action, so the movie never wears out its welcome, despite a running time that could've used a good trimming. It's also fun to see the rapport between Gibson and Garner, as if the present and former Mavericks were a kind of surrogate son and father, bonded by their mutual skill in charming and conning their way through tight spots. Director Richard Donner also pays tribute to old Westerns by casting veterans of the genre in cameo roles (including Bert Remsen, Dub Taylor, and Denver Pyle), and Gibson's Lethal Weapon costar Danny Glover pops in for a surprise appearance. None of this really adds up to much since the movie makes no pretense about taking itself seriously, but that's precisely why audiences found it so entertaining. --Jeff Shannon

Enjoyable film & very reasonably priced /dvd cover format is neat January 30, 2010 Nelson Conti I have always liked "Maverick" because it is both funny and entertaining. I wanted the DVD, and felt that the DVD cover format (keepcase) is neat and more practical than the traditional DVD cover format. The price is very reasonable.
2nd Best Poker Movie... September 23, 2009 D.H. 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Rounders is the only better movie out there about No Limit Texas Holdem and this movie was made earlier. Probably a bit of inspiration to the makers of Rounders as this movie was a bit more comedy than actual reflection on the game of Poker.
Richard Donner and Mel Gibson are a team made in heaven. Mel Gibson always in good form, is the card shark on his way to winning a large poker competition...The early Western version of the WSOP. The problem is that he keeps running into people who in one way or another, don't want him to get there. Regarded as the best Poker player in the West, Maverick must outmanuveur a cunning temptress (Jodie Foster/Annabelle Bransford), a jealous degenerate cheat (Alfred Moline/Angel) and the host of the game and all around scalliwag (James Coburn/Commodore). The cast is on form and the action is always engaging.
Maverick Soundtrack September 15, 2009 Charles E. Ellevan (California) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I am biased as I am a Randy Newman fan, and I appreicate his style. I'm also a soundtrack collector. I'm also a fan of the original Maverick series. The music was good in the sense that it was 'western' style...cowboy music . . . as opposed to 'country western'. Overall I was satisfied with the music, it is pretty much what I expected and I did see the movie, so I knew what I was getting. Watching it again on the western channel inspired me to get the soundtrack. I guess my only disappointment was that some homage was not paid to the original Maverick TV series theme. Maybe it was there and I just didn't hear it. That's my only complaint. If you liked the movie, then get the soundtrack.

Still funny April 2, 2009 Malorie Reynolds 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I find this movie as funny now as when it first came out. Mel Gibson, James Garner and Jodie Foster are completely charming and wonderful to watch. It is simply a good time for a couple of hours. Not deep. Not thought provoking. Just a good time and a good chuckle.
