You might not get a thrill from the sight of Faye Dunaway and Marlon Brando throwing popcorn into each other's mouths, but that didn't stop Don Juan DeMarco from gaining a new lease on life thanks to cable television and home video. It's a quirky romantic comedy about a mental patient (Johnny Depp) who claims to be Don Juan, the world's greatest lover, and he gets quite a few women to believe it's true. Brando plays the psychiatrist who tries to analyze his patient's apparent delusion, and Dunaway plays Brando's wife, who wants to inject some Don Juan-ish romance into their marital routine. Walking a fine line between precious comedy, wistful drama, and delicate fantasy, the movie gets a big dose of charm from its esteemed cast, with Depp delivering dialogue that would have sounded ludicrous from a lesser actor. This may not be a great movie, but it is guaranteed to put you in an amorous mood. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Don Juan DeMarco   June 27, 2009

I don't like Johnny Depp. Have never felt he was truly a good actor and was too blown up by media hype and a lot of mindless teeny-bopper infatuation. I have changed my mind, at least for this movie. Depp does an outstanding job of showing us the inner workings of a man who has the sensibilities necessary to woo women ...no matter their age or culture. He shows us lessons we men all need to learn if we are to successfully love the women who come into our lives. To reach into a woman's soul with love and tenderness, insight into their wants and desires...their needs: this is the epitomy of a succesful love affair, whether it be with a new-found love or your long-married wife. It is also the ultimate failing of most of us men. We don't remember what we saw in our loves which attracted us to them in the first place, and we forget to continually woo them as we should and as they need.
Marlon Brando, as the worn-out , over-weight, and work-weary psychiatrist Dr. Jack Mickler, is a perfect foil to Depp's off the wall character. The interaction between the two and subsequent rebirth of real interest in life and love in Mickler is the real story for us. If we learn the truths taught by DeMarco, we all benefit.

The interplay between the characters of Don Juan and Don Octavio is full of warmth and caring. A real "feel good" movie. A treasure to watch Marlon Brando in one of his last films. Johnny Depp creates a character of sincerity and humor. The film asked us each to question for ourselves what is sane and what is not sane. You are left to draw you own conclusion.

    5 out of 5 stars A delightful bijoux of a movie   October 19, 2008

The casting was spot on. Mercurial Johnny Depp can be anyone, I believe he IS Don Juan De Marco. Even at 300# plus, Brando still has it, Dunaway is and will always be a beautiful woman, and the combination obviously worked. The visit of Don Juans mother from Mexico throws a spanner in the Grandmas very believeable story.
In the end, does it really matter what IS, when you can have what you want just by looking with different eyes.
The music by Michael Kamen is superb! I have ordered the sound track. If you don't want to get up and dance (with your dog, if necessary)you just have no fantasy or romance in your soul.
It is a pity that this movie is relatively unknown.Everyone I have shown it to has been touched. I'm just glad it's available.

It is Johnny Depp's best films. Only he could pull off such a unique and wonderful character. It is a keeper!
