Amazon.com essential video Robert Clayton Dean (Will Smith) is a lawyer with a wife and family whose happily normal life is turned upside down after a chance meeting with a college buddy (Jason Lee) at a lingerie shop. Unbeknownst to the lawyer, he's just been burdened with a videotape of a congressman's assassination. Hot on the tail of this tape is a ruthless group of National Security Agents commanded by a belligerently ambitious fed named Reynolds (Jon Voight). Using surveillance from satellites, bugs, and other sophisticated snooping devices, the NSA infiltrates every facet of Dean's existence, tracing each physical and digital footprint he leaves. Driven by acute paranoia, Dean enlists the help of a clandestine former NSA operative named Brill (Gene Hackman), and Enemy of the State kicks into high-intensity hyperdrive. Teaming up once again with producer Jerry Bruckheimer, Top Gun director Tony Scott demonstrates his glossy style with clever cinematography and breakneck pacing. Will Smith proves that there's more to his success than a brash sense of humor, giving a versatile performance that plausibly illustrates a man cracking under the strain of paranoid turmoil. Hackman steals the show by essentially reprising his role from The Conversation--just imagine his memorable character Harry Caul some 20 years later. Most of all, the film's depiction of high-tech surveillance is highly convincing and dramatically compelling, making this a cautionary tale with more substance than you'd normally expect from a Scott-Bruckheimer action extravaganza. --Jeremy Storey

Enemy of the State December 29, 2009 Arnita D. Brown (USA) This movie is a kicky, knockout thriller. A solid two hours of pure entertainment. An all star cast list including Will Smith, Gene Hackman, Jon Voight, Jack Black, Seth Green, Jamie Kennedy, Jason Lee and many more piece together a heart stopping action packed and original four star production.
Enemy Of The State December 4, 2009 Mike Warick (Ontario, Canada) Excellent movie. Love the technology and the constant moving plot. Gene Hackman and Will Smith rock in this movie. Looks even better in Blue-Ray. Fun scene, the blender theft. If you like this movie you may also like Deja Vu with Denzial Washington.
Well-done conspiracy theory thriller November 18, 2009 drkhimxz (Freehold, NJ, USA) In the interests of full disclosure, I should say that I take no conspiracy theory film or novel as truth. However, I learned many years ago that, if one is to enjoy that genre, one must accept whatever conspiracy the creators want us to believe in. Whether Martians, former KGB agents, escaped Nazi's, Presidents of the United States or Church leaders, it is all the same to me, so long as they make it dramatically credible. Dramatic sense is not empirical sense.
This suspension of reality which marks my approach, enabled me to find considerable pleasure in this decade old film. With an inventory of terrific technological tools, the bad guys are able to keep tabs on the good guys as well as perform all sorts of evil deeds. Will Smith does a good job as the central good guy as does Jon Voight as the central bad guy. When Will Smith is teamed, by circumstances, with Gene Hackman, they become a dynamic duo, as does almost any team of which that veteran actor is a part.. Supporting players , for the most part, perform ably and the action scenes are exciting.
If you like this type of film, you will like this one.
Excellent October 20, 2009 Dave P. (Nashville, TN) Will Smith is great in this role (when isn't he). Please watch and listen carefully for a message that is going deaf in our ears but is part of troubling trends in our country. Just judge for yourselves.
The American citizens the last to know... October 15, 2009 Electrifier (FL) The relevance of this film is strikingly frightening
today.
The unsuspecting John Q Public (Will Smith) is on
the run, even stripping down to his boxers to symbolize
the insecurity of the average Amercian by the
ever-intrusive government sworn to uphold our ineffective
Constitutional Rights; highlighting modern technology gone
rampant under the guise of protecting our supposedly
inherent natural rights. The right to privacy is trampled
on by NSA agents (portrayed as young prying clowns)under
the command of a nefarious reptile played to a T by Jon
Voight.
The players in the system of illusory rights hound
John Q Public since he unknowingly carries on him
evidence of a Congressman's death and it's at this
point where things slowly unfold for the naive citizen
as he is relentlessly chased by Big Brother via satellites,
ATM and tunnel cameras, cell phone signal tracking, bugs,
etc. hitting home the film's point: privacy is a thing of
the past. It even points out that a natural serene pond
view of geese isn't a safe place for some privacy. The film
gains steam midway as a paranoidal ex-NSA agent, Brill
(Hackman) literally knocks some sense into John Q and
shows him the painful truth; the truth that Joe Blow
easily dismissed during a scene earlier into the movie.
Released almost 3 years prior to 9/11, "Enemy of the State"
bombards the senses with quick editing, hyper-action, and
loud jolts of sound as if to say, "Wake up!" Orwell has been
rolling in his grave for some time now. One reviewer pointed
out Brill's birthday of 9/11 in a quick flash scene. If only
this was a coincidence and not a confirming nod to those who
are privy numerologists, but considering the studio which
released this film it should be of no surprise.
So sit back, crack open a can of soda and pop open a bag
of popcorn and pay witness to one man's life quickly turned
upside down by a power hungry, guilt-ridden government
seeking safety under its ever-intrusive eye.
