Amazon.com Vacation paved the way for the John Hughes movie dynasty of the 1980s. Written by Hughes (who would go on to write, direct, and/or produce The Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Uncle Buck, Home Alone, and so on) and directed by Harold Ramis (Caddyshack, Groundhog Day, Stuart Saves His Family), the first Vacation movie introduces us to the all-American Griswold family: father Clark (Chevy Chase), mother Ellen (Beverly D'Angelo), son Rusty (future Hughes staple Anthony Michael Hall), and daughter Audrey (Dana Barron). They all pile into the car for a cross-country road trip to Walley World, stopping along the way to view the world's biggest ball of twine. John Candy, Imogene Coca, and Randy Quaid (as yokel Cousin Eddie) pop up along the way. The movie was a big hit, and was followed by several sequels--National Lampoon's European Vacation, National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, and National Lampoon's Vegas Vacation--but this one is still probably the freshest and funniest of the bunch. --Jim Emerson

even funnier than than i remember it being March 6, 2010 falcon (canada) i remember watching this movie more than a few years ago and thinking it was OK,but nothing great.then, having just watched it again,i really enjoyed it.i laughed a lot in all the right places.all the jokes worked worked.there's not a boring moment.and as someone who also lived through a vacation from hell which was almost a carbon copy of the one endured by the Griswold clan,i could certainly sympathize with them.of course it's always nice to see someone else go through something instead of yourself.it's hard to believe this movie came out in 1983.it still stands the test of time,in my opinion.it's one of those classics that will never(hopefully)get old.for me,Vacation is a 4/5
Another Childhood Favorite!!! June 14, 2009 Pumpkin Man Ever since I was a kid, I have loved this movie. Everybody does an awesome job and the movie has a great storyline with awesome comedy and famous quotes. Chase plays Clark Griswold, a man who is going to take his family to Walley World, no matter what happens. They run into a lot of trouble, deals with his aunt, visit his redneck cousin, stay at crappy hotels and much more! I highly recommend that you take a VACATION!!!
truly a classic March 19, 2009 Ashlyn Strobel 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
One of my favorite old time movies. Chevy Chase is a sometimes oblivious but loving father taking his family on a vacation to a theme park in California. A lot of wacky things happen along the way and while visiting relatives. The acting is superb and the writing is fun. This is a great family movie and one for your collection of dvd's.
One of the greatest movies of the 80's! October 23, 2008 Allison Horne (MA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful

National Lampoon's Vacation is one wild incredible movie. It is an insane mixture of side-splitting humor and unnerving adventure. Chevy Chase plays the part of the con-man father. Other actors include Beverly D'Angelo, Randy Quaid, Dana Barron, Micahel Hall, John Candy, Imogene Coca, and Christie Brinkley.
There is one ridiculous scene after another as the family travels down the road to their vacation destination: the girl stirring the punch with her hand, the hamburgers with no meat, the biting dog, Aunt Edna in her hair rollers, the disaster in the desert, the dip in the pool. The fun goes on and on. Then there is the grande finale.
This movie made millions. It's classic comedy -- a real hoot. Don't miss it.
