Amazon.com essential video Mel Gibson set aside his art-house credentials to star as a crazy cop paired with a stable one (Danny Glover) in this full-blown 1987 Richard Donner action picture. The most violent film in the series (which includes three sequels), it is also the edgiest and most interesting. After Gibson's character jumps off a building handcuffed to a man, and Gary Busey (as a cold, efficient enforcer) lets his hand get burned without flinching, there is a sense that anything can happen, and it usually does. Donner's strangely messy visual and audio style doesn't make a lot of aesthetic sense, but it stuck with all four movies. The DVD release includes production notes, Dolby sound, theatrical trailer, optional full-screen and widescreen presentations, optional French soundtrack, and optional English, French, and Spanish subtitles. --Tom Keogh

Don't throw away that DVD yet March 9, 2010 HyperCaz (Sydney, Australia) This has been and always will be one of my favourite movies. As one who can't seem to keep away from buddy cop films, I enjoy Lethal Weapon whenever I sit down for it. The plot may be slightly uninteresting and the music bordering on derelict, but the banter between Riggs and Murtaugh makes it all worthwhile, not to mention the beginning of a very awesome partnership.
On the blu-ray quality I can say there's not a huge improvement from the previous release, though it does look that extra bit better when played on a big screen than its fuzzier cousin the DVD. I would be happy with this copy except...
With the DVD director's cut, all the extra scenes were played within the film. In the blu-ray, they are isolated as special features. I happen to really like these scenes, especially the one with Riggs and the hooker, so not being able to see them in the flow of the movie grates on me. I would like the choice on which version I watch on a blu-ray. Surely it cannot be that hard.
I would give this film 5 stars, but in only playing as the theatrical version and with the lack of vast improvement on quality, it doesn't rate so well.
One of my favorite 80's movies. March 5, 2010 Randy H. Baker Lethal Weapon became one my all time favorite 80's movies because of Mel Gibson's character Martin Riggs. Riggs starts off as a homicidal cop flirting with suicide due to his wife's death. He gets transferred where he is partnered up with Roger Murtaugh. Murtaugh learns that Riggs served in Vietnam in the Special Forces, is fluent in martial arts and packs a Beretta 9mm with a 15 round magazine semi-automatic pistol thus nicknaming Riggs a Lethal Weapon. Lethal Weapon delivers on action ( and snippits of comedy as well ) and does not disappoint. I highly recommend.
Lethal Weapon January 21, 2010 Arnita D. Brown (USA) While investigating Amanda Hunsacker's death, the two uncover a heroin-smuggling operation run by Vietnam War special forces troops, known as 'Shadow Company' (see Air America). The scheme is masterminded by a ruthless retired General, Peter McAllister (Mitchell Ryan) - the former commander of Shadow Company - and his chief enforcer, Mr. Joshua (Gary Busey). Murtaugh and Riggs - also Vietnam War veterans - discover that Michael Hunsacker was laundering the profits through his bank. McAllister had ordered the murder of his daughter to keep his laundryman under control. As Riggs and Murtaugh confront Michael Hunsacker, Mr. Joshua makes a surprise appearance in a helicopter and shoots him in the back with a sniper rifle. This one is definitely a winner. If you haven't seen this superb movie, then I strongly recommend that you do. Great movie.
wheres the rest January 1, 2010 HvnsMessiah I loved these movies and all I want to know is when are the 2 final installments going to be released, been far too long for them not to also be out on blu-ray. Anyone else agree???
I LOVE Lethal Weapon...just not this copy. December 3, 2009 Ehric T. Mcvey (Tacoma, WA) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I'm a Blu-ray enthusiast, and a Lethal Weapon enthusiast. So, I was VERY disappointed in both the quality of the Blu-ray formatting for this (it looks like DVD quality), but what REALLY mad me upset is the fact that it's not the directors cut. I guess that perhaps it was a bit naive of me to assume that it would be, but come on, this is BLU-RAY we're talking about here! I was not impressed. Not to mention that the seller said it was in "Good Condition", but the spine and back of the sleeve was severely crumpled and torn. Had this been a good quality Blu-ray conversion, and it been the directors cut, I would have cared not regarding the crumpled sleeve. However, as it was not the case, the crumpled nature was the straw.
P.S. I just checked on Amazon, and there's STILL no Director's Cut available. Until there is, I will not be buying any Lethal Weapon films on Blu-ray.
