Product Description Netherlands released, PAL/Region 2 DVD: it WILL NOT play on standard US DVD player. You need multi-region PAL/NTSC DVD player to view it in USA/Canada: LANGUAGES: English ( Dolby Digital 2.0 ), Dutch ( Subtitles ), SPECIAL FEATURES: Interactive Menu, Scene Access, Trailer(s), SYNOPSIS: Jack Nicholson reunited with director Bob Rafelson, director of Five Easy Pieces and The King Of Marvin Gardens, for this violent, downbeat crime drama. Alex (Jack Nicholson) is a wine dealer whose business is going belly-up, along with his life. His step-son Jason (Stephen Dorff) hates him, his wife Suzanne (Judy Davis) has a drinking problem and is the constant target of Alex's abuse, and Alex is having an affair with Gabriella (Jennifer Lopez), a domestic worker from Cuba. One of the people that Gabriella cleans for has a diamond necklace worth several million dollars locked in a safe in a bedroom. Desperate for a quick score to get himself out of debt, Alex sees a opportunity for a lot of fast money and hooks up with Victor (Michael Caine), a career criminal who knows how to open safes but is desperately ill with tuberculosis. Nicholson and Rafelson first worked together on the film Head, starring The Monkees (Nicholson only had a bit part, but he also wrote the screenplay and was credited with producing the soundtrack album). SCREENED/AWARDED AT: San Sebastian International Film Festival,
Amazon.com You can feel the gears grinding, trying to turn this attempt at film noir into something sleek and insinuating, instead of the labored near miss it turns out to be. Jack Nicholson is a Florida wine merchant whose business isn't as good as he has his unhappy wife (Judy Davis) believe. He's also consistently at odds with his churlish stepson (Stephen Dorff). Meanwhile, Nicholson is plotting to steal an expensive diamond necklace and dump his wife, aided by his mistress (Jennifer Lopez) and a sleazy safecracker (Michael Caine). It's the kind of thing James M. Cain used to toss off effortlessly, but in director Bob Rafelson's hands the strain shows at every seam as crime and romantic treachery put all of the characters on a violent collision course. --Marshall Fine

An under appreciated gem... February 2, 2010 David Wilkins (Minnesota) The central event in this story is a heist, but it's really a story about conflict and everything that evolves from it. Conflict among family, conflict among partners in crime, and conflict with one's own nature, as we're shown in two fine performances by Jack Nicholson and Michael Caine. Long stretches of this movie really crackle, due in most part to the powerhouse performances and well written characters. But well written shouldn't be confused with likable or noble.
The two principle characters are men past their prime, failing at both life and profession, and with years and options dwindling. Their predicament is their own doing, and looking at their faces and the way they carry themselves, they most likely know it. Watching these two men work within this material shows us why they are legends. Their plan is to steal a million dollar diamond necklace from a local residence. Despite appearances, Nicholson needs the money to shore up his failing business. He's a damaged, complex man who's carrying hundreds of scars too deep for him to work through. Despite his abusiveness and anger, he does occasionally reach out to those close to him, but fails to connect. Caine creates a memorable character, with poorly dyed hair and a pasty complexion. He has a hacking cough that won't quit, and he keeps an asthma inhaler in his shirt pocket. His age and failing health are part of his motivation; it's more desperation than lust for riches. As he puts it: he doesn't want to die in a county hospital.
The plot turns and twists, but never veers off track into unbelievable or absurd. The supporting cast is praise worthy, especially the under rated Judy Davis, as Nicholson's tormented wife. Though this effort falls a little short of being a true classic, it's a worthy reuniting of Nicholson and director Bob Rafelson. Their previous efforts were 'Five Easy Pieces' (1970), 'The King of Marvin Gardens' (1972), and 'The Postman Always Rings Twice' (1981).
Film Noir Is Alive and Well October 1, 2008 Michael B. Druxman (Austin, TX) This 1997 thriller from director Bob Rafelson is a first-rate piece of film noir, populated with a fascinating cast of multi-dimensional characters and filled with enough dramatic plot twists to keep viewers off-balance right up until the finish.
Though he lives in a nice house, drives an expensive car and has a beautiful wife (Judy Davis), Florida wine merchant Jack Nicholson is virtually broke. That's why he's enlisted the aid of career criminal Michael Caine to help him steal a diamond necklace worth over a million dollars.
The burglary goes well, but when Davis discovers that Jack is about to run off with his mistress (Jennifer Lopez), she gets violent, knocks him unconscious, then flees with her grown son, Stephen Dorff, who has taken a liking to Lopez, not aware that she's involved with step-father Nicholson. Unknowingly, mother and son have also fled the scene with the diamond necklace, which means that Jack and the very vicious Caine have no choice but to go after them.
The DVD has some excellent extras, including audio commentary by Rafelson, Nicholson, Caine and others, deleted scenes and several retrospective documentary featurettes.

good movie November 4, 2007 Joalle (USA) I had never heard of this movie until I was searching through Amazon one day. Being a Jack Nicholson fan I thought why not buy it. Glad I did.
been there, done that, seen that ... oh so many times before December 7, 2006 Thomas M. Sipos (Santa Monica, CA) 0 out of 3 found this review helpful
I assume all the rave reviews are because Bob Rafelson and Jack Nicholson and Michael Caine have such high reputations, but really, this is a very tired old "noir" story that we've all seen 100s of times before. Rafelson says in the commentary that he wanted to update his tale for the 1990s by emphasizing the "greed" aspect. Huh? Every noir film is about greed.
Yeah, there are lots of twists and turns and betrayals, but it's all so very predicatable because all noir films have the same betrayals.
I was mostly bored by this film. I only got it because it had Jennifer Lopez, but her role was disappointingly small. Not a tiny role, but not so big either.
Anyway, if you've only seen 200 or 300 noir films, so that you're still surprised and tense over the same old, same old plot points (the usual betrayals motivated by greed and sex), then I guess you may as well see this one too.
