Amazon.com It's tough trying to beat the 1934 version of the popular adventure-romance story, starring Leslie Howard as the 18th-century British hero who poses as a fop in London society but runs a secret mission to rescue the doomed in Robespierre's Paris. But this 1982 television version, starring Anthony Andrews (Under the Volcano) as the Pimpernel and Jane Seymour as his beloved but estranged wife, is quite a treat. Andrews and Seymour expertly capture the essence of a relationship suffering from misunderstandings and elusive passion, and there is plenty of crackle to the action sequences. Clive Donner (What's New, Pussycat?) brings some strong cinematic qualities to this television presentation. --Tom Keogh

The seek him here they seek him there June 28, 2009 bernie (Arlington, Texas) Them Frenchies seek him everywhere. Is he in Heaven? Is he in Hell? That damned elusive pimpernel. By Sir Percy Blakeney/The Scarlet Pimpernel (Anthony Andrews) It is the French revolution and everone is losing their heads. Sir Percy Blakeney must fake being ridicules and may even lose the love of his life Lady Marguerite Blakeney (Jane Seymour.) This is necessary to save their friends from the guillotine. How long can he pull this off while right next to him is Citizen Chauvelin (Ian McKellen) who is trying to track down The Scarlet Pimpernel. He even threatens Marguerite's with the life of her brother to find the pimpernel. The story, originally a play then a novel has been remade and in some ways improved through the years. However, this version will always be the classic that by others are measured. This Play that still has the feel of a play was made into several films. The most popular is the 1934 version starring Leslie Howard. It is hard to improve on that version. However, I think it has a rival in this production. We have a little more swordplay and a few of the character were more fleshed out. Scarlet Pimpernel (1934)
A Time for Heroes June 26, 2009 William M. Turner (Utah) "They seek him here, they seek him there, those Frenchies, they seek him everywhere". This line entertains a fraction of the thrilling story of heroism and valor of a late 18th century English nobleman who risks his life in a variety of disguises to save the lives of French aristocracy condemned to death by revolutionaries. What surprised me was the humor...it was very funny! Everyone knows Jayne Seymour and most know Anthony Andrews, but Ian McKellan gives one of the best acting performances I've ever seen. Where has he gone? He's terrific! That is REAL talent! Clearly this film belongs to him. This is a wonderful story and very well done. I thought it ended rather abruptly, but other than that this is now one of my favorite movies. Give it a try. You'll be glad you did!
Really enjoyable period adventure! June 12, 2009 egreetham (Massachusetts) One of the best period movies ever. British aristo Sir Percy Blakeney masquerades as the daring Scarlet Pimpernel, rescuer of blue-blooded Frenchmen in distress during the Reign of Terror. He must keep his identity secret even from his beautiful and misunderstood French bride. Anthony Andrews is the perfect swashbuckler--brave, elegant, witty, but sensitive--and Jane Seymour the perfect picture of 18th century French loveliness in the 1982 film of Baroness Orczy's novel. Ian McKellan, in his pre-Gandalf days, makes a wonderful (and surprisingly good-looking) villain. Good acting, fine production values, and a gallant atmosphere make this movie a winner. Just one complaint: in places, the plot stretches credulity beyond the breaking point--What, she never noticed the thousands of pimpernels in Blakeney's drawing room and on his coat of arms? She didn't recognize her husband's voice as he stood two feet behind her? What happened to the Dauphin, anyway? But this is a minor quibble--go out and get the movie!
The 2nd modern superhero June 7, 2009 L. J. P. Boros (SoCal) My dad turned me on to this story. He prefers the original with Leslie Howard but I have all of the versions and I like them all. This is the charactor that Zorro and later Batman & Superman were created from. Now arguably the first superhero that I know of is Gilgamesh but almost no one has heard of him outside of school these days. I call him the second modern superhero because Sherlock Holmes was published before Baroness Orczy wrote her story. WEll enough pontificating. Watch it for yourselves and decide if you like it or not. As always Jane Seymour is the very definition of Classic Beauty.
what a movie! May 6, 2009 Julie Johnson (Utah) I watched this movie til I had it memorized! Best movie I've seen in a long time
