Amazon.com essential video NASA's worst nightmare turned into one of the space agency's most heroic moments in 1970, when the Apollo 13 crew was forced to hobble home in a disabled capsule after an explosion seriously damaged the moon-bound spacecraft. Tom Hanks, Kevin Bacon, and Bill Paxton play (respectively) astronauts Jim Lovell, Jack Swigert, and Fred Haise in director Ron Howard's intense, painstakingly authentic docudrama. The Apollo 13 crew and Houston-based mission controllers race against time and heavy odds to return the damaged spacecraft safely to Earth from a distance of 205,500 miles. Using state-of-the-art special effects and ingenious filmmaking techniques, Howard and his stellar cast and crew build nail-biting tension while maintaining close fidelity to the facts. The result is a fitting tribute to the Apollo 13 mission and one of the biggest box-office hits of 1995. --Jeff Shannon
Amazon.com Relying primarily on actual footage shot by NASA and by news organizations, this video documents the drama of the aborted Apollo 13 mission, in which three astronauts came close to losing their lives in space. The actual recording of commander Jim Lovell telling Houston about the "problem" made famous in the Hollywood version of Apollo 13 is presented, and the scenes showing distressed engineers in the actual control room in Houston are in some ways much more dramatic than anything seen on the big screen. This is, after all, reality, with real people scrambling under intense pressure to save real lives. Besides the footage inside mission control, the video also showcases invaluable flight footage shot by the astronauts aboard the crippled spaceship. This video takes an essentially chronological approach, but the technique of using the crew's postflight news conference to serve as narration, while it is at first confusing, serves a useful purpose. This is a no-frills production, but the excitement as NASA engineers mobilize and the whole world watches the news about the stricken spaceship is so gripping that any flourishes would only seem to get in the way. --Robert J. McNamara

excellent (4.6/5) March 6, 2010 falcon (canada) i remember watching this film eons ago,and thinking it was horrible.in fact,i even fell asleep while watching it.however,i decided to revisit it a few days ago and had the exact opposite reaction.this time,i thought it was brilliant.i thought the story flowed perfectly, and the tension mounted at just the right tempo and hung there until the very end.the acting was spot on.and the music added the perfect atmosphere.i haven't seen too many Ron Howard film's,but this is one of the best that i have seen of his.i would encourage anyone who hasn't seen it to check it out.who knows, you might be surprised, for me Apollo 13 is a 4.6/5
Apollo 13 (Widescreen Collector's Edition) February 20, 2010 Arnita D. Brown (USA) It had been less than a year since man first walked on the Moon, but as far as the American public was concerned, Apollo 13 was just another routine space flight, until these words pierced the immense void of space, Houston, we have a problem. Stranded 205,000 miles from Earth in a crippled spacecraft, astronauts Jim Lovell, Fred Haise and Jack Swigert fight a desperate battle to survive. Meanwhile, at Mission Control, astronaut Ken Mattingly, flight director Gene Kranz and a heroic ground crew race against time, and the odds to bring them home. One of the most significant things about Apollo 13 is the fact that it managed to be such a strikingly realistic movie despite the abundance of well-known Hollywood actors. Tom Hanks, of course, can convincingly act any part in the world, and his role in Apollo 13 is no exception. All of the actors involved seemed to have been given parts that they were born to play, because they were so successful in the roles. The true events of the historic Apollo 13 mission are amazingly re-created here, and the results are spectacular. "Apollo 13" is an excellent story made even better by the fact that it is true, it has great acting, skillful direction, and plenty of tasteful humor. It is not only a highly entertaining movie, but is also a educational one.
Widescreen version best February 17, 2010 V. Leonelli Fantastic movie based on the book. With Harris, Hanks, Quinlan, Bacon, Paxton, and Sinese...one of the best collections of actors you can get. The script we all know. Hanks is the cool calm and collected astronaut during what was a near catastrophic Apollo mission. I'd recommend getting the wide screen version, as it includes lengthy commentary from the astronauts themselves, as well as from the director Ron Howard's making of the film.
Excellent Package February 14, 2010 G. Card (rtp nc) This set has it all - 2 versions of the film, documentary with archival footage and lots of other extras.
The film captures a tumultuous moment in American history and Ron Howard gives an uncompromising glimpse into the culture of the day.
Recommended for a good story and historical significance.
So what if we already know the ending...? February 6, 2010 Long Ago Sure, everyone knows that the Apollo 13 crew gets home safely. So it's a testament to how good this movie is that it still enthralls the viewer despite already knowing how the story ends. All the elements of a great story and movie are there - acting, directing, script, drama, suspense, some humor...everything!
