Amazon.com essential video Little did Tom Cruise know that he would become a box-office superstar after he cranked up some Bob Seeger and played air guitar in his underwear. But there's more to this 1983 hit than the arrival of a hot young star. Making a stylish debut, writer-director Paul Brickman crafted a subtle satire of crass materialism wrapped in an irresistible plot about a crafty high schooler named Joel (Cruise) who goes into risky business with the beguiling prostitute Lana (Rebecca De Mornay) while his parents are out of town. Joel turns his affluent Chicago-suburb home into a lucrative bordello and forms a steamy personal and professional partnership with Lana, but only as long as the two can avoid the vengeful pimp Guido (Joe Pantoliano) and keep their customers happy. A signature film of the 1980s, Risky Business still holds up thanks to Cruise's effortless charm and the movie's timeless appeal as an adolescent male fantasy. --Jeff Shannon

classic June 26, 2009 John Anthony Mosby I did enjoy this classic, although do not tend to revisit such items once I've viewed them.
Occasionally amusing but dated June 16, 2009 Alan A. Elsner (Washington DC) The young Tom Cruise stars in this fantasy about a teenager in the Chicago suburbs setting up a temporary brothel in his home when his parents take a few days in Florida. Cruise is fine and gets to do an air guitar dance in his underwear -- but the movie seems awfully dated. Rebecca de Mornay is the young whore with a heart of gold. There's a cute car chase and a nice scene with Dad's Porsche going into Lake Michigan but much of the rest is slightly yucky. This movie came out when the big AIDS explosion was taking place -- but you'd never guess from watching this. Some of the interplay between Cruise and his parents recalls The Graduate but without the bite of that classic. There is also a character called Guido, a mafiosi type who seems like an incredibly gentle gangster to audiences that have become familiar with the brutality of The Sopranos. (I think the same actor later met a grisly fate in that series).

A FUN TRIP DOWN MEMORY LANE....I WAS SURPRISED TO FIND IT'S RATED R, AS I RECALL IT AS POPULAR WHEN MY CHILDREN WERE TEENAGERS....THOUGHT MY TEEN GRANDCHILDREN WOULD ENJOY IT. BUT ALTHOUGH THEY SHOWED NO INTEREST, I ENJOYED IT A GREAT DEAL.
Teasing but Unfulfilling April 16, 2009 Amory Blaine (New York, NY USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I am a great fan of Risky Business, but this edition is pretty disappointing. The picture quality and sound are fine, but you'd think with the advent of Blu-Ray and all of its storage capacity, that they could have actually spliced the director's cut last scene onto the movie! Instead, you have to watch the scene on its own, so it's impossible to tell how it really flows with the film. Also, I'd love to watch the commentary, but I refuse to watch it picture-in-picture, which is really distracting. Once again, where is the option to turn off the picture-in-picture? I'd love to buy Blu-Ray, bit it seems that you really need to wait and buy discs that take full advantage of the medium...otherwise it's a waste.
Dated early 80s comedy given a boost by Tom Cruise's star quality January 30, 2009 Peter Hoogenboom (New Zealand) "Risky Business" seems to be making a gentle crack at the corrupt and materialistic adult world. Tom Cruise plays a high school kid and reluctant "future enterpriser" who sets up a bordello in his parent's house while they are away on holiday. His materialistic parents seem more interested in their stereo, Porsche, holidays, and what college their son gets into rather than the feelings of their own son. The pre-AIDS sexual zeitgeist date the film somewhat but Cruise's star quality is plain for all to see. He turns the film into something far better than it deserves.
