| Editorial Reviews:
Amazon.com essential video Readers of John Berendt's bestselling novel were bound to be at least somewhat disappointed by this big-screen adaptation, but despite mixed reaction from critics and audiences, there's still plenty to admire about director Clint Eastwood's take on the material. Readers will surely miss the rich atmosphere and societal detail that Berendt brought to his "Savannah story," and the movie can only scratch the surface of Georgian history, tradition, and wealthy decadence underlying Berendt's fact-based murder mystery. Still, Eastwood maintains an assured focus on the wonderful eccentrics of Savannah, most notably a gay Savannah antiques dealer (superbly played by Kevin Spacey), who may or may not have killed his friend and alleged lover (Jude Law). John Cusack plays the Town & Country journalist who arrives in Savannah to find much more than he bargained for--including the city's legendary drag queen Lady Chablis (playing "herself")--and John Lee Hancock's smoothly adapted screenplay succeeds in bringing Berendt's characters vividly to life with plenty of flavorful dialogue. --Jeff Shannon

Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil January 30, 2010 Arnita D. Brown (USA) This panoramic tale of Savannah's eccentricities focuses on a murder and the subsequent trial of Jim Williams: self made man, art collector, antiques dealer, bon vivant and semi-closeted homosexual. John Kelso a magazine reporter finds himself in Savannah amid the beautiful architecture and odd doings to write a feature on one of William's famous Christmas parties. He is intrigued by Williams from the start, but his curiosity is piqued when he meets Jim's violent, young and sexy lover, Billy. Later that night, Billy is dead, and Kelso stays on to cover the murder trial. Along the way he encounters the irrepressible Lady Chablis, a drag queen commedienne, Sonny Seiler, lawyer to Williams, whose famous dog UGA is the official mascot of the Georgia Bulldogs, an odd man who keeps flies attached to mini leashes on his lapels and threatens daily to poison the water supply, the Married Ladies Card Club, and Minerva, a spiritualist. Between being Jim's buddy, cuddling up to a torch singer, meeting every eccentric in Savannah, participating in midnight graveyard rituals and helping solve the mysteries surrounding Billy's murder, Kelso has his hands full. A stylish and haunting movie-noir thriller, "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil" is another lesson in peerless movie-making by Clint Eastwood. A highly enjoyable and recommended movie.
Southern Comforts December 19, 2009 Karen A. Murphy (Arizona) Clint Eastwood excels in everything he does, perfectly capturing Southern manner and charm, mystery and intrigue, framed by the lush Savannah backdrop of gorgeous scenery and history. I've been to Savannah, and really enjoyed revisiting via this movie! John Cusack and Kevin Spacey simply shine together, and Eastwood's daughter does a fair job as the romantic interest. The scene stealer is a starlet transvestite, overly dramatic, stunning and extremely humorous---Lady Chablis playing herself! You may giggle, afterwards, upon hearing "tootsie roll :)" This movie's cinematography and casting are exceptional and capturing a novel on film is always daunting...Bravo, Mr. Eastwood!

This book was recommended to me. I found out that several friends had
alread read it. It is a delightful story and I enjoyed every reading
moment. Then we bought the DVD. Great suspense and humor through out the
book. Will probably read it again. Bought another copy for a gift for
my sister in law, who had lost her copy and wanted another. Great story especially about Savannah, where I have visited in the past. Made it all
that more interesting.
