Product Description A young writer sacrifices his life in the present to find happiness with a beautiful woman in the past. No Track Information Available Media Type: DVD Artist: REEVE/SEYMOUR Title: SOMEWHERE IN TIME Street Release Date: 01/07/2003 Domestic Genre: DRAMA
Amazon.com It's silly, it's superficial, it's so desperately earnest about its tale of time-spanning love that you almost wish for a cheap flatulence gag just to break the solemn mood. But there's something so unabashedly gushy and entertaining about Somewhere in Time that you can't begrudge its enduring popularity. The film has become a staple of romantic-movie lovers since its release in 1980, and endless showings on cable TV have turned it into a dubious classic of sorts--a three-hanky weeper that anyone can enjoy as a guilty pleasure or a beloved favorite, with no apologies necessary. In his first film after the star-making success of Superman, Christopher Reeve stars as a contemporary playwright who visits a posh hotel and sees the portrait of an actress (Jane Seymour) who had performed there in 1912. He becomes obsessed with this beautiful woman and learns all he can about her, and then discovers a method of hypnotically transporting himself backward in time to meet her. "Is it ... you?" she says upon seeing the lovestruck playwright, and it's clearly a mutual attraction. But even the slightest reminder of the playwright's modern time can jar him from his seemingly real existence in the past, so his wonderful love affair is constantly just a step from being stolen away. Based on Richard Matheson's novel Bid Time Return, this flaky film may strain one's tolerance for plot holes and corny romance, but it's hard to deny its lasting appeal--and let's face it, guys, it'll make wives and girlfriends swoon if they're in a tearjerker mood. --Jeff Shannon

A LOVE STORY THAT IS TIMELESS February 9, 2010 bittersweet (witch city salem ma) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
SOMEWHERE IN TIME
christopher reeves as famous playwright richard collier...jane seymour as elise mckenna...famous actress of her day...christopher plummer as w.f. robinson...ms. mckenna's manager...bill erwin as arthur...costume design by jean-paul dorleac...original relentless score by john barry...screenplay by richard matheson...based on his novel...."bid time return"....directed by jeannot szwarc.....
it is 1972 millfield college...drama students after the play shmoozing with aspiring playwright reeves....we then barely notice a shadowy figure sitting quietly in the shadows of the now darkened auditorium. she sits motionless in a cold worn steel folding chairs...
we see and hear clearly now..."come back to me" the old woman whispers to reeves as she puts something into his hand and folds his fingers over it...we see that her own hands and fingers show history and wisdom of the ages ..reeves silently follows with his eyes as the old woman turns and slowly walks away...we then learn that that object in his hand is an old yet perfectly polished pocket watch...but why?
john barry's music sets the scene with melancholy and reflection as we see lovely and elegantly dressed woman arrives back at THE GRAND HOTEL. the beauty of this magnificent destination of the gentry..is additional emphasized at night by a thousand bright lights and becomes the main focus for the rest of our story of love and desire between reeves and seymour....
the old woman sits rocking holding a script to her heart while we see a small replica of the grand hotel on a side table...
cut to chicago eight years later. by now reeves is a successful playwright and should be enjoying all the entrapments of such.. we see our tall young handsome guy starring pensively out from the ceiling to floor penthouse windows but he is seeing nothing. something from the past is beckoning him away..he gets in his car and leaves chicago behind only to drive up the driveway to the GRAND HOTEL....
elderly escorts him to room 313....."have we ever met before?".... asks reeves putting his finger to his lip in confusion.."no i don't think so" reeves replies with certainty...
before dinner he roams the lobby and is drawn to the "hall of history" room...we see his attention and his body slowly turn around and he becomes instantly captivated by a portrait of a most beautiful young woman. arthur tells him that this mysterious woman's name is elise mckenna...a famous actress who starred in a play there in 1912...reeves becomes obsessed with this woman and focuses all of his attention on what he can find out about her..he sees the last photo ever taken of her...and it turns out to be the old woman that put the pocket watch in his hand...
he finds a book called "travels through time" in her home. her companion tells him that she read that book over and over before her death..reeves discovers other things like the GRAND HOTEL music box that played his favorite music...these and other things begin drawing him ever closer to wanting to find her through time and space......
reeves feels alive for the first time in years as he prepares for his journey back in time to 6 pm june 27 1912...he transform his modern furnishings back to that of 1912....after several false attempts to hypnotize himself back in time....it finally works and he awakes to a bright sun lighted room and the sound of horses hooves outside his window....he has made it back in time! funny but reeves finds himself right at home in 1912 since he is of a mind for fantasy and fancy..
as we get closer to our reunion he sees a dark shadow of a woman reflected in a windowpane...his eyes search the landscape for her until he glimpses her through the trees walking by the lake. with a backdrop of crystal blue water..she is a vision of loveliness; as he approaches her an instant recognition between the two.."is it you?"...."yes"..."are you alright?"....however...the code of the day prevents them from acknowledging each other.
plummer knows seymour's secret...."is he the one?" she asks him..."is he?...only you can tell elisa"....but we learn later that he had told her she would meet someone that would change her life...
all the while the early 20th. century set decoration catches the eye...well catches my eye for antiques...crystal perfume bottles gas lamps ivory comb and hair brush...
my goodness...during her play performance later that evening...seymour is entrances by thoughts of reeves and strays from dialogue to speaks of her romantic attachment to a dream..."what would i say to him if he were really here"..."i've never known this feeling"..."is there any way i can tell you how my life has changed?" "there are so many words to say"..."i can't find the words except these...i love you"....and then she addresses the audience and says "and that's what i would say"..and receives a standing ovation!
reeves is light amusing imposingly tall and "she's crazy about me"...he says at one point declaring with a huge smile...a beautiful romance ensues...a buggy ride past the coin shop where he originally had purchased a coin in past? present? time..a romantic day on the lake..the way reeves towers over seymour is just about the most sexual thing you can imagine!....we are treated to a private moment when him gently cups her face in his hands and kisses her passionately...and maybe a suggestion of a lovely romantic evening shot through a lace curtain.
when he mistakenly takes a copper penny out of his pocket he is instantly and literally ripped away from the arms of his love and is sent forward in time....
reeves pines away for his lost love....until the day he dies. as he dies..he floats above it all and sees the beautiful light... seymour is standing there and takes his hand in hers with a smile...reeves and seymour are together forever now.....
Somewhere In Time February 6, 2010 Sally Repass (VA) This is a WONDERFUL love story!!! I bought one for myself, my sister-in-law and my cousin. I highly recommend this movie to anyone who likes a good Love Story!

Somewhere in Time DEFECTIVE CD February 6, 2010 KJohnson (Utah) I have contacted this seller several times by email asking advice on what to do. NEVER A RESPONSE.
This CD arrived at my home, loose in the case and broken. I am NOT happy with this seller at all. When they can't even respond to a problem, that makes me wary of their business ethics.
Awful February 6, 2010 Thomas Aurich Do not buy this movie. It is literally the worst DVD transfer I have ever seen. I thought one of the previous reviewers was kidding when he said his VHS copy was cleaner. It is extremely grainy and very bad. You WILL be disappointed.
Great Movie January 25, 2010 Louise (New York) I just love this movie. Had seen it twice on TV and then decided to buy the DVD. I was not disappointed the third time I saw the movie. Christopher Reeve is so great in this movie. I love the music so much that I also purchased the music CD from Amazon.
